DESCRIPTION
Under the direction and supervision of the Athletics Supervisor, the Athletics Program Instructor will be responsible for conducting a specified athletic class. This includes keeping participant attendance, instruction of class, following lesson plans, management of equipment, ensuring safety of participants and completing any necessary paperwork.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Arrive at your scheduled shift on time and in appropriate attire.
  2. Prepare all needed equipment for the class before participants arrive.
  3. Inform supervisor of any equipment that needs to be fixed or replaced and remove any equipment if necessary.
  4. Use provided class roster to take attendance for the class each time it meets.
  5. Inform participants of emergency exits, safety topics and any other information necessary on the first day of class.
  6. Follow the lesson plan or class outline to deliver the program to participants.
  7. Report any safety issues or concerns to the Athletics Supervisor, Hunt Club Facility Manager or Risk Manager at the time they are found.
  8. Enforce all of the rules and policies set for the class and Park District for staff and participants.
  9. At the conclusion of each class the instructor will make sure all equipment is accounted for and put away properly.
  10. Report any problems, complaints or concerns to the Athletics Supervisor as they happen.
  11. Complete the necessary accident/incident form for any injuries when they happen. This form will then be turned into the specific supervisor within 24 hours.
  12. Attend any needed trainings communicated by the Athletics Supervisor.
  13. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Athletics Supervisor or Hunt Club Facility Manager.
  14. Maintain a positive attitude toward all co-workers and participants.
  15. Be approachable and act professionally at all times.
  16. Be knowledgeable of phone locations and the telephone numbers for the police, fire, and paramedics in case of emergency.
  17. Assist other supervisors or front desk staff in any extra tasks they have during down time in your shift.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Your job may entail running, jumping, crawling, bending, kneeling, squatting or sitting when working your shift. Occasionally movement of supplies or equipment is necessary in which case the maximum weight that you are expected to be able to lift is 25 lbs., though typically it will be less than this. You will also be working in different weather conditions depending on the sport, season and location of program.

It is expected that all Gurnee Park District Staff comply with the policies and procedures as set forth by the Gurnee Park District Board of Commissioners. Resources that outline these policies and procedures include the Personnel Policy Manual, Safety Manual, Departmental Manual, Area or Job Specific Manuals and other written or verbal procedures as provided by your supervisor. As all situations cannot be documented even in manuals such as these, it is further expected that your actions as an employee are always performed with safety in mind, respect of your fellow staff and customers in mind, and at the direction of your supervisor. The Gurnee Park District has developed the SOFFI Customer Service Standards as a guide to our agency’s expectations and recommendations for successful work behavior. It is expected that all staff learn and understand these policies and procedures.

Note: hourly range reflects all programs and actual rate will be dependent on each specific program posting.

Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: Individuals 18 years or older who have experience working with children, teens and/or adults in a recreation setting, specifically teaching/leading programs. A working knowledge of various sports or a background playing sports.
  • Education: A basic knowledge of working with participants of multiple ages in a recreation setting.
  • Skills: Ability to communicate effectively via e-mail, phone and in person with direct supervisor. Must also be able to communicate with large groups of people participating in a given class. This includes enforcing rules and policies of the park district pertaining to the facility or program that you are leading.
  • Certifications: CPR, First Aid and AED certification is preferred
  • Competencies: The ability to learn new skills and make mature decisions regarding safety. Ability to work with diverse groups of participants and communicate effectively with them. Must have a positive attitude.
