JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                                                                                                                            

This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the canal and related systems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS       

  • Performs basic heavy equipment operating skills including identification, operating techniques, earthmoving and more.
  • Coordinates work plans with other operations and department personnel.
  • Performs pre and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections by completing the daily inspection sheet.
  • Performs minor equipment maintenance and repairs as needed, including but not limited to fueling, greasing, and other basic equipment services per operator’s manual.
  • Dredges canals and creeks; spreads soil; dresses levees.
  • Communicate with landowners, farmers, and the general public regarding job-related issues.
  • Clears rights-of-way of trees and brush, for construction of equipment roads and ramps.
  • Installs and constructs water gates and meters.
  • Assists with underdrain pipe and bridge repair/replacement.
  • Maintains equipment maintenance, operation records, and fuel reports.
  • Performs Texas One Call notifications.
  • Documents work performed with photographs and GCWA Asset Management System.
  • Works alone in secluded areas.
  • Ensure all external customers, vendors, contractors, government regulators & members of the public relationships are maintained on a professional and productive basis.
  • Interact with organization team members and other departments professionally.
  • Contribute to a safe work environment by following the Authority’s safety rules, guidelines and procedures.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT                                                                                                                                                  


  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, utilizes the sense of smell, and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, and machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, venomous snakes, and alligators. Work requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).


QUALIFICATIONS/PREFERRED SKILLS       


  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in the basic functions relevant to the duties of the position.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL Learner’s Permit.
  • Must be able to obtain an Operator I Certification issued by GCWA within 30 days of hire date.
  • Intermediate level understanding & competency in utilizing a wide variety of software & computer applications, including MS Office, Outlook, and other applications specific to the job.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations of pipeline and powerline safety.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to the rigging of loads.
  • Ability to analyze basic problems and implement solutions.
  • Skill in oral & written communication.
  • High School/GED diploma required. 
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record in compliance with GCWA Personnel Policy.
