GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment of the Emergency Services Department.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is responsible for the mechanical maintenance on all emergency vehicles and equipment at 5,000 mile intervals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Perform routine maintenance on all emergency vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose all problems.
- Make necessary repairs, major or minor.
- Maintain proper records for all repairs.
- Order and maintain adequate parts on hand for maintenance and repairs.
- Schedule outside repairs and follow up on repairs made.
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of knowing when maintenance is
required. - Skill in knowing the proper capacities of fluids and normal
ware of components. - Ability to read and understand service manuals and schematics, knowing proper function of failure.
- Ability to use hand tools or power tools necessary to perform jobs.
- Knowledge of correct function of failed component.
- Ability to schedule repairs with other vendors.
- Ability to keep legible documents of all work performed.
Minimum Qualifications
Certificate in medium/heavy duty truck technology or a related field, or two years of heavy duty vehicular maintenance experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Associates Degree in medium/heavy duty truck technology or a related field.

Special Requirement
Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license at the time of hire. Must obtain NC State inspection license, refrigeration recovery certificate, and Class B NC Driver's License within 6 months of hire. Must obtain medical responder certificate within 12 months of hire.

Work Conditions
Work is normally performed inside a garage. Hazards include working with petroleum products, batteries, working under vehicles, working in confined spaces and occasionally working on ladders.

Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
