DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Employees in this class are responsible for carrying out assigned duties relative to the detention, security, and discipline of juveniles in accordance with rules and regulations. Employees supervise the daily activities associated with school, recreation, nutritional intake, and housekeeping of the juveniles. Work includes participating in the housekeeping, food service, and recreational activities that are planned for the Center. Employees are also involved in providing supportive and reality counseling with the juveniles. Employee must have patience and use judgment and discretion in dealing with juveniles, family members, the Court system, and visitors. Work is performed under the supervision of the Juvenile Attendant Supervisor assigned to the employee's work shift, and it evaluated by close observation and regular conferences.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Must be currently enrolled at an Institution of Higher Learning (college or university); AND, currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or Human Services.

Essential Duties and Tasks
- Actively seek knowledge and understanding of the organization, its industry, and relevant processes.
- Plans and supervises activities of the detainees.
- Shadow professionals, attend meetings, and observe daily operations to gain hands-on insights.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and supervisors, both verbally and in writing.
- Approach tasks with a proactive mindset, identify potential challenges, and propose constructive solutions.
- Exhibit a positive attitude, maintain punctuality, and adhere to workplace dress code and etiquette.
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn new skills, adapt to changing priorities, and handle unforeseen tasks.
- Collect and analyze data or resource materials to support the writing of papers and reports.
- Work to gain a functional understanding of the topics discussed.
- Fulfill any academic requirements set by your educational institution as part of completing the internship.
- Assisting the Juvenile Counselor Technician with tasks and projects, including policy evaluation, trend analysis, and other outreach.
- Completing research assignments of interest to the intern and of use to County staff
- Assists volunteers with activities that are planned for the juveniles.
- Promotes positive behavior of juveniles by attempting to modify antisocial attitudes, discouraging undesirable habits and encouraging worthwhile habits.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Working knowledge of the attitudes, problems and behavior patterns of juveniles under restraint.
- Working knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices of controlling and supervising juveniles confined to a detention center.
- Ability to supervise and control juveniles individually and in groups and to work with youth with behavioral problems.
- Ability to think and act quickly during emergencies.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to prepare standard reports.
- Ability to counsel juveniles in appropriate behaviors, attitudes, and habits.
Must be currently enrolled at an Institution of Higher Learning (college or university); AND, currently pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or Human Services.
