Working with a collaborative Residential Programs team to provide support services for our clients who are blind or visually impaired and learning countless new skills. That’s just some of what you’ll experience when you join the team at Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB). We’re looking for an engaging and collaborative team player to join us at our San Rafael campus for a Temporary Resident Advisor opportunity that will last approximately 3 to 6 months.

In this role, you will provide supplemental support to our instructor team by being present for clients in a residential dormitory setting during off-peak hours of instruction. You will be working 1 day shift and will be required to stay overnight in the Student Residence 2 nights per week.

Schedule:

Schedule Option 1:

Day Shift -Saturday 7:30am-4pm

Overnight Shifts - Sunday 3:30pm-8:00am (Monday), Thursday 3:30pm-8:00am (Friday)

Schedule Option 2:

Day Shift -Sunday 7:30am-4pm

Overnight Shifts - Monday 3:30pm-8:00am (Tuesday), Friday 3:30pm-8:00am (Saturday)

  • Overnight shifts will require staying on campus in our Residence Hall. Must be available to field emergency calls while on duty.

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting clients with general dog care and handling, orientation, and guide-related education
  • Providing mentorship and counseling to clients on issues affecting their relationship with their guide, referring complex matters or concerns to appropriate instructor/supervisor staff
  • Managing critical situations requiring immediate intervention, including acting in response to dog and client medical emergencies after hours and reporting noteworthy incidents
  • Orienting clients to the residence building and campus grounds
  • Facilitating evening and weekend group on-campus educational experiences
  • Assisting clients with the use of various electronics available in the residence (e.g., computers, alarm clocks, televisions)

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with, teach, and engage socially with individuals of various personalities, abilities, and communication styles
  • Ability to display a balance of flexibility and professionalism in interactions with clients
  • Solid time management, organizational, and administrative skills
  • Availability to work weekends and some holidays and be flexible with work times
  • Ability to safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, weighing up to 90 lbs., with varying strength and manageability
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook email, Word, Excel, SalesForce, and Access or other database applications
  • Prior experience caring for and handling dogs is highly desired, but not required. Must be willing to learn.

Pay Range:

$27.00-$31.00/hour
