SEL Coordinator

 

Guadalupe Centers Charter Schools (GCCS) serves more than 1,600 students from PreK–12 and is a free, open-enrollment public charter school system located in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 97% of our students identify as Latinx, and many are bilingual or English learners. Our network includes Guadalupe Centers Elementary School, Guadalupe Centers Middle School, and Guadalupe Centers High School.

GCCS grew out of Guadalupe Centers’ educational programs — part of the longest continuously operating agency serving the Latinx community in the United States since 1919. Position Summary: 

 

The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator supports the effectiveness of GCCS counselors, social workers, and therapists by providing leadership in resources, systems, processes, and professional learning. The coordinator serves as a central support for student services staff, ensuring alignment with DESE standards, the Missouri Comprehensive School Counseling Program (MSCP), and district priorities while promoting consistent, high-quality services across all campuses. The SEL Coordinator will maintain communication, support, and coordination with partnering therapeutic agencies.

The SEL Coordinator works collaboratively with school leaders, teachers, counselors, and support staff to promote a culture of belonging, emotional wellness, and positive school climate throughout the district.

 

Reports To: Director of Family Engagement and Student Services 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Framework Development & Implementation

  • Assist in designing and implementing a district-wide SEL framework that aligns with DESE’s Social-Emotional Learning Competencies and GCCS’s educational goals.
  •  Provide guidance to counselors, social workers, and therapist on district processes, documentation, and best practices to ensure consistency across campuses and with partnering therapeutic agencies
  • Develop and maintain shared resources, toolkits, and procedural guidance for student support staff.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Services to strengthen service delivery within MTSS and other student support systems, including Tier 1 curriculum/resources and Section 504 delivery, coordination, and professional development for SEL staff.

Collaboration & Integration

  • Work closely with the Director of Family Engagement and Student Services to integrate SEL into family engagement, restorative practices, and counseling initiatives.
  • Facilitate collaboration among counselors, social workers, therapist, administrators, and family engagement staff to improve coordination of services.
  • Serve as a resource to student support staff by connecting them with evidence-based interventions, community resources, and district initiatives. 
  • Develop and facilitate consistent Trauma Informed Care (TIC) Team processes that promote collaborative review of student needs, identification of appropriate supports, and implementation of trauma-informed strategies prior to more intensive interventions.

Program Resources & Data

  • Assist in identifying, organizing, and overseeing the acquisition of SEL curricula, materials, and assessment tools.
  • Curate and manage counseling, SEL, behavioral health, and crisis response resources for student support staff.
  • Coordinate data collection, analysis, and reporting related to SEL outcomes and school climate, using findings to inform program improvements.
  • Assist teams in reviewing student support and school climate data to identify trends and inform continuous improvement. 

Professional Development & Coaching

  • Evaluate professional development needs, and coordinate and facilitate professional development for counselors, social workers, and therapist focused on best practices, compliance, and emerging student needs.
  • Provide coaching and consultation to student support staff regarding case management, service delivery, and implementation of district processes.
  • Support onboarding and mentoring of new counselors, social workers, and therapist. 

Continuous Improvement

  •  Monitor DESE guidance, school counseling standards, and student services best practices to ensure district alignment.
  • Gather feedback from student support staff to improve resources, procedures, and professional learning opportunities.
  • Participate in district committees and initiatives related to school culture, climate, and student wellness.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field required.
  • Valid Missouri Teaching or Student Services Certificate (School Counselor, School Social Worker, or related field) preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience working in education, counseling, or student support services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate SEL or student wellness programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships across diverse teams.
  •  Experience leading or supporting school counseling, social work, mental health, or student services teams preferred.
  •  Demonstrated ability to facilitate adult learning, build collaborative systems, and support continuous improvement.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness, particularly within Latinx and multilingual student populations.
  • Bilingual ability; English required and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout the school and classroom. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
