PAY RANGE: $54,414.00 - $90,689.00
REPORTS TO: Lead Lab Technician
WORK LOCATION: Seguin, TX
SUMMARY
This position performs routine chemical, bacteriological, and physical analyses on samples of raw and treated potable water and wastewater. Data from completed analyses are entered into a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and are then sent via laboratory report to customers for personal or permitting use. In addition, this position will perform duties related to quality assurance and quality control programs and equipment management as directed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilize the current laboratory Quality Assurance System Manual (QASM), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and supervisory memorandums.
- Prepare chemical reagents and standards for assigned parameters as needed.
- Perform assigned analyses with work on intermediate and advanced analytical instrumentation.
- Perform assigned analyses in microbiology using aseptic techniques.
- Must be able to set up and complete method development on new instrumentation.
- Receive samples at the laboratory following sample acceptance procedures.
- Calculate, record, and report test results using a LIMS database.
- Adhere to the quality assurance procedures when evaluating data prior to entering it into the LIMS.
- Write and/or update existing SOPs as assigned.
- Maintain instrumentation and update maintenance records for assigned instruments.
- Maintain orderly work benches, including proper cleaning and storage of equipment.
- Maintain orderly data records and instrument logs.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies for assigned parameters and coordinate ordering additional supplies when needed.
- Perform quarterly pipette checks as required for quality assurance.
- Greet customers, vendors, and visitors, and assist with laboratory tours as requested by the supervisor.
- Perform other functions as directed by supervisor, such as field work, sample pickup, laboratory bench rotations, subcontract sample packaging, upkeep of equipment records, data validation, document review, audit preparation, etc.
- Work with various laboratory analytical instruments and associated computer software, vacuum pumps, incubators, ovens, and furnaces at temperatures varying from 20°C-550°C.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Understand basic chemical properties and reactions.
- Knowledge of unit conversions.
- Attention to detail to precisely follow procedures.
- Possess technical writing skills.
- Hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, depth perception, and color vision are necessary.
- Must be able to interpret and accurately follow written laboratory operating procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications & LIMS.
- Respond to visual and audible alarms.
- Operate a motor vehicle.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, customers, vendors, and auditors both orally and in writing.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor of Science degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medical technology, or any discipline deemed acceptable by the laboratory management.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Driver’s License
- Acceptable M.V.R
EXPERIENCE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have at least eight years of experience in a professional laboratory.
Special Requirements:
- Must have knowledge of the latest editions of the following:
- Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes.
- National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) Institute (TNI) Standard.
- Must be familiar with the following regulations:
- Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) guidelines.
- EPA 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Clean Water Act, Drinking Water Act, and Guidelines
Establishing Test Procedures for the Analysis of Pollutants.
- Texas Administrative Code (TAC) Title 30 Environmental Quality.
- The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP).
- Must be able to pass a Demonstration of Capability (DOC) on assigned analyses after receiving sufficient on-the-job training.

Physical strength to lift forty-five pounds overhead. Wear personal protective equipment, including a full-faced respirator. When in the field, employees must wear protective footwear in compliance with the ANSI or ASTM standard. New employees are provided with footwear that complies with the standard. Replacement footwear is provided annually for qualifying employees.
TRAVEL
Overnight travel to professional seminars and GBRA operational locations is occasionally required.

Much of the work is performed in climate-controlled, well-lit conditions. Some field work may be required. Weekend hours may be occasionally required.
