This role is critical in establishing a solid foundation for data management within the organization, ensuring that data is organized, accessible, secure, and aligned with business objectives.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Data Engineer
- Interprets and delivers impactful strategic plans improving data integration, data quality, and data delivery in support of business initiatives and roadmaps.
- Designs and implements scalable pipelines for ETL/ELT processes from various sources into the organization’s data systems.
- Develops and maintains data models and schemas across multiple environments (OLTP & OLAP).
- Simplifies the existing data architecture, delivering reusable services and cost-saving opportunities in line with the policies and standards of the company.
- Optimizes data workflows for performance, cost, and reliability.
- Defines and implements the long-term technology strategy and innovations roadmaps across analytics, data engineering, and data platforms.
- Defines and manages standards, guidelines, and processes to ensure data quality.
- Installs, configures, and maintains SQL Server environments.
- Performs database tuning, query optimization, and index management to ensure high performance.
- Monitors database performance and implement proactive maintenance strategies.
- Manages database backup and recovery plans, including disaster recovery procedures.
- Implements security measures including roles, permissions, encryption, and auditing.
- Conducts database upgrades and patches with minimal downtime.
- Translates high-level business requirements into data models and appropriate metadata, test data, and data quality standards.
- Engages senior business stakeholders to secure strong understanding and ensures that the delivery of the project aligns with longer-term strategic roadmaps.
- Leads and participates in the peer review and quality assurance of project architectural artifacts across the Enterprise Architect (EA) group through governance forums.
- Works with IT teams, business analysts, and data analytics teams to understand data consumer needs in order to develop solutions.
- Evaluates and recommends emerging technologies for data management, storage, and analytics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Proficiency in programming/scripting languages such as Python, R, T-SQL, C#, .NET, Java, and/or PowerShell.
- Proficiency in data science languages/tools such as SQL, SAS, or Excel.
- Strong understanding of the design and implementation of modern data architectures and concepts such as cloud services (Azure, GCP), real-time data distribution, and modern data warehouse tools (e.g., Snowflake, Redshift).
- Strong understanding of ETL/ELT processes, entity-relationship modeling, metadata systems, and data quality tools and techniques.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to think strategically and relate architectural decisions and recommendations to business needs and client culture.
- Ability to guide solution design and architecture to meet business needs.
- Ability to assess traditional and modern data architecture components based on business needs.
- Ability to regularly learn and adopt new technology, especially in the ML/AI realm.
- Ability to collaborate and excel in complex, cross-functional teams involving data scientists, business analysts, information technologists, and stakeholders.
- Ability to synthesize and clearly communicate large volumes of complex information to senior management of various technical understandings.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field.
Experience And Special Requirements
- 5 years of data engineering and/or DBA role required. An equivalent combination of relevant experience can be used in lieu of the degree requirement.
- Experience with data governance frameworks and best practices.
- Experience with relational database systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle).
- Experience with ETL and data transformation tools such as Fivetran, Databricks, Informatica, Coalesce, and/or Alteryx.
- Experience with data visualization tools and technologies such as Power BI and Tableau.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and pipelines for database deployment and schema management.
- Experience with data backup, recovery, security, and integrity.
- Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and later) including SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
