SUMMARY

The Performance Development Specialist is responsible for the training and development of the company workforce for the Grand Traverse Band Economic Development Corporation (GTB EDC). Participates and assists in the analysis and assessment of individual and organizational training and development needs; coordinates, designs and delivers a variety of specified training and development programs for a range of individuals and teams; focuses on teaching specific areas or on-the-job capabilities needed for positions.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Development and delivery of group and individual training and instruction covering specified areas, including but not limited to employee development, strategic planning, management training, leadership skills, annual refresher training and customer service.
  • Develops training curricula that meets instructional goals and objectives.
  • Have a positive and upbeat personal presentation with the ability to motivate and train large groups of employees.
  • Meet with managers and supervisors to ascertain training needs.
  • Develops and implements leadership development and mentor programs.
  • Formulates teaching outline and determines instructional methods, utilizing knowledge of specified training needs and effectiveness of such methods as individual training, group instruction, lectures, demonstrations, meetings and workshops.
  • Helps administer learning management system (LMS), develop and curate LMS content.
  • Creates custom training content for on-line and in-person training.
  • Selects or develops teaching aids including but not limited to training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, computer tutorials and reference works.
  • Coordinates or performs administrative functions necessary to deliver and document training programs.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of training and development programs and utilizes relevant evaluation data to revise or recommend changes in instructional objectives and methods.
  • Analyze and assess training and development needs for staff and departments.
  • Research a variety of information (e.g. specialized courses, on-line material, training programs, consultants) for the purpose of developing new programs that meet training needs.
  • Conduct new hire Orientation and TIPS training as needed.
  • Develop and conduct the annual “company-wide” trainings such as Customer Service, Harassment, Blood Borne Pathogens, CPR/First Aid, etc
  • Conduct supervisory and management training.
  • Maintain training records and certificate logs and notify department managers prior to expiration.
  • Willingness to cross-train and provide support in related areas of operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


OTHER NECESSARY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to design, implement and evaluate curriculum, testing and teaching methodologies.
  • Skilled in preparing instructional aids and plans.
  • Ability to analyze and assess training and development needs.
  • Must possess outstanding verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning styles.
  • Must possess teaching and facilitation skills with extensive knowledge in the following areas:
  • Behavioral concepts and adult learning theory
  • Customer service standards and procedures
  • Organizational analysis and intervention techniques


EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Education or related field of study required PLUS, minimum of 3 years’ experience developing training programs, workshops and sessions within the customer service/hospitality industry, OR minimum 8 years’ work experience designing and developing training programs, workshops and sessions within the customer service/hospitality industry. Requires prior experience conducting training needs analysis and strong presentation and computer skills. Must have previous experience with administration of a learning management system (LMS), instructional and presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, etc.). Human Resource Information Software (HRIS) experience preferred.


EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint are essential.
Equipment used will include but is not limited to a multi-line phone system, copier, fax machine, personal computer, and other audiovisual equipment as necessary.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Michigan Driver’s License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
This position requires the use of a personal vehicle and travel within a 40-mile radius as part of the regular assigned duties. Overnight travel for additional training may be required.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

May be required to lift up to 25 lbs. and be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time. May also be required to reach, bend, stretch, kneel, crawl, lift and carry on occasion.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations while remaining focused and professional. Must be able to deal with difficult people without losing perspective. Must be able to work productively under strict time restraints with variable deadlines. Must be able to professional and confidently present a training program in front of a large audience of various skill and knowledge levels.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a classroom setting and in a typical office environment under constant surveillance. Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.


COMMENTS

Native American and Tribal Preference will apply. Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Must be able to work flexible hours and to take on additional responsibilities when asked. Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality. An extremely friendly and extroverted personality is essential in this position.
