What are the responsibilities and job description for the Melt Technician position at GSM METALS INC?
Responsible for melting / casting numerous precious metal alloys to customer and internal specifications using various machines. Able to safely follow documented techniques to assure a quality, homogeneous product while maintaining best practices for proper sampling & inventory control requirements.
Essential Functions:
- Safety – Operator must wear required safety Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times when on the shop floor. This equipment will include safety eye protection, reinforced toe footwear and gloves. When actual melting is underway, additional protective equipment such as heat resistant jackets, coveralls or aprons as specified by the supervisor.
- Melting / Casting: Set-up, operate & maintain various casting machines to safely cast a “homogeneous” product to customer and internal specifications. Duties include die set-up, alignment of starter bar & withdrawal system, melting, alloying, casting of product, breakdown of set-up, and minor maintenance of machinery as required.
- Assay Sampling: Cut & submit sample(s) of product to assay lab for analysis using various hand tools (band saw, drills, etc.) in accordance with documented work instructions.
- Cleaning: Must keep machinery & casting area clean at all times to avoid cross-contamination of alloys.
- Inventory Control: Monitor and record weights as necessary of issued material to assure no loss of precious metal & to maintain proper paperwork requirements for the purpose of product traceability. Also, monitoring inventory of casting supplies & alerting supervisor when replacements are required in advance of need.
