The Assistant General Counsel, Privacy and Digital, Global R&D is part of the newly created global Privacy, Digital, and Cybersecurity team of lawyers and compliance professionals aligned to the business at GSK. This position, based in the US, is critical to supporting the US business and is responsible for providing digital and privacy support to GSK’s US operations and will be instrumental to Global R&D.
As a senior member of the global Digital, Privacy and Cybersecurity team this role will be expected to have a strong general knowledge of global privacy law and specifically regulatory laws in the US. The role is also accountable for providing expert legal advice in GSK’s Global R&D business and other special projects in emerging technologies. The role requires a good understanding of global issues relating to the use of new technologies (AI, blockchain, big data & analytics) as well as new technologies being adopted in pharmaceuticals, life sciences, and biotech. A good grasp of healthcare regulations in the US, privacy regulations, and excellent drafting skills will be necessary. This role requires that you are comfortable working in an area of the law that is not always settled, continuously evolving, dynamic and has shades of gray. This role is a key decision maker for multi-jurisdictional and complex digital and privacy issues involving multiple local regulations, international data transfer issues and/or key processes (e.g., high risk PIAs, data breach etc.). The ideal candidate will have exceptional communication skills, judgement and will thrive on working in a fast-paced environment. This role will also require a good knowledge of US pharmaceutical and healthcare regulations.
In addition, this role will be responsible for for overseeing GSK’s overall compliance with US privacy and data protection laws and regulations and for monitoring compliance and advising on best practices. This role is the primary point of contact for GSK employees, data subjects, and DPAs in respect of US data privacy issues.
Key Responsibilities
Provide solution-oriented legal advice to enable the Global R&D business to deliver their objectives. This role will also be key to working in conjuction with the Chief Digital Officer and supporting GSK’s digital transformation.
Promote the global ditigal, privacy and cyber strategy across the US business. Work alongside the VP, Head of Privacy, Digital, and Cybersecurity to develop GSK’s strategy on digital, privacy and cyber.
You will be a key contact to certain groups within the US business in relation to digital and privacy matters.
Advise on specialised digital and privacy contracts relationg to R&D agreements, such as complex technology licensing and data-related projects.
You will support the implementation of strategic initiatives and be responsible for any training to the US business (to both clients and Group Legal colleagues).
Subject matter expert for all digital and privacy matters, including proactive and creative counseling for the global R&D business.
Monitor and advise on the US privacy infrastructure and compliance with US data protection laws and regulations.
Coordination and consultation with Legal and Compliance Privacy experts and advisers and the wider GSK business as appropriate on a broad range of data protection issues.
Think strategically about global data flows and enterprise data governance while still being able to support individual research projects at a tactical level.
Data Security Incident Management Support at a regional level with supplementary support based on data type.
Support special projects as assigned (e.g., CCPA and other US state laws, Brexit, Schrems II, Data Transfer Risk Assessments, HIPAA, AI/ML, Enterprise Tech Initiatives).
Provide cross coverage for all data types and business units, as needed, as part of a team that supports each other and cross trains regularly.
Act as primary legal contact and partner to SVP, R&D Tech.
Review upcoming legislation and provide strategic advice required in order to implement any changes necessary within GSK. Recommend improvements to data privacy practices and processes to ensure compliance with US data protection laws and regulations.
Contracting support for transactional and local attorneys, as needed (e.g., privacy schedules, data transfer agreements, data licensing terms) including advising on the privacy elements of collaborations and other Business Development deals.

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- Law degree in your home jurisdiction
- 10 years post-qualification experience
- Experience in private practice and/or in-house experience in the Life Sciences, Healthcare, and Pharmaceutical sector
- Experience advising clients on digital and data strategy & knowledge of technology-based solutions
- Experience drafting and negotiating complex technology and data related agreements
- Experience working with data privacy laws and regulations, plus relevant work experience in managing data privacy matters and working within a global team.
- Experience in handling data breaches, and working closely with security, IT, PR, and senior management teams

Since this role requires that the incumbent be seen as a privacy expert both internally within GSK and externally in our industry, prior experience in privacy industry associations such as IAPP, IPMPC and DP Legal and/or life sciences industry associations such as EFPIA, AdvaMed and Transcelerate would be helpful
- Privacy CIPP or similar qualification.
- Experience liaising with regulators.
- Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and operate effectively as part of an international team.
- Ability to work independently, engage proactively and interact with colleagues in the Legal and Compliance team, internal clients, and senior management.
- Experience with SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, OSS, complex licensing, and data sharing arrangements
