Digital Accessibility Tester (Remote)
Location: Hartford, CT
Duration: 6 Months
Pay Rate: $50/hr on C2C / 1099 (All Inclusive) OR $45/hr on W2
Job Summary
The Digital Accessibility Tester will work across multiple state service domains including health, business, education, transportation, employment, judicial, housing, agriculture, and other public service sectors. The role focuses on ensuring compliance with accessibility standards including WCAG, ADA, and Section 508.
This position involves extensive manual accessibility testing of digital assets and collaboration with cross-functional teams such as website administrators, developers, platform engineers, and digital asset managers to support remediation efforts. The tester will analyze accessibility issues, communicate findings, and assist teams in implementing best practice solutions.
This role requires strong QA practices, accessibility expertise, and the ability to deliver results under project deadlines. The work directly contributes to improving access to essential state services.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccessibility Testing
- Conduct accessibility testing of digital products, services, and technologies to ensure compliance with accessibility standards.
- Perform extensive manual testing of digital assets using assistive technologies.
- Validate accessibility improvements before and after remediation.
- Apply accessibility testing protocols and quality assurance standards to ensure accurate results.
Accessibility Assessment
- Audit state systems and customer-facing digital assets to identify accessibility issues.
- Develop and improve accessibility testing cases and protocols.
- Analyze and document accessibility issues and provide recommendations for remediation.
- Provide code-level and role-based remediation guidance.
- Evaluate vendor technologies and digital services for accessibility compliance.
Documentation and Reporting
- Document accessibility testing results and maintain testing data repositories.
- Support benchmarking, gap analysis, compliance tracking, and risk assessments.
- Prepare accessibility performance reports and analysis documentation.
- Maintain organized documentation aligned with accessibility governance frameworks.
Collaboration and Communication
- Communicate testing findings and remediation guidance to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Provide updates to accessibility leadership on testing progress, challenges, and outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with developers, engineers, and product teams to resolve accessibility issues.
- Establish strong working relationships across multiple teams to support accessibility initiatives.
Accessibility Program Support
- Maintain testing libraries, accessibility standards documentation, and tool configurations.
- Support enterprise accessibility governance frameworks and reporting processes.
- Mentor internal team members and agency staff on accessibility testing best practices.
- Stay updated with evolving WCAG, ADA, and Section 508 standards and incorporate updates into testing methodologies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Web Development, Library Science, Information Science, or Human Computer Interaction.
- Minimum 3 years of digital accessibility testing experience including manual testing and compliance validation.
- At least 2 years working within digital product teams collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

- Experience with device accessibility features such as:
- Speech-to-text
- Text-to-speech
- Screen magnifiers

- Alternative input devices
- Strong knowledge of HTML, ARIA, and semantic markup.
- Experience auditing both modern and legacy systems for accessibility issues.
- Understanding of User-Centered Design (UCD) principles and accessibility design practices.
- Knowledge of responsive web design techniques and frameworks.
- Experience testing internal business applications such as case management or data collection systems.
- Ability to provide practical solutions for accessibility improvements.
- Strong collaboration, mentoring, and knowledge-sharing skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex technical accessibility issues to non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
