Position Overview
The Lead Material Handler is responsible for overseeing daily warehouse operations including receiving, shipping, inventory handling, and material movement. This role leads by example on the floor, ensuring accuracy, safety, and efficiency while supporting team productivity and development. The Lead serves as a point of contact for team members and collaborates with supervisors and cross-functional teams to meet operational goals.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Support
- Provide day-to-day guidance, training, and support to material handling team members
- Serve as a subject matter expert for shipping, receiving, and material handling processes
- Assist in assigning tasks and monitoring workflow to ensure timely completion
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Support onboarding and training of new employees
Operations & Execution
- Perform and oversee receiving, locating, and transferring materials accurately and in a timely manner
- Ensure proper loading and unloading of materials across trucks, conveyors, racks, pallets, and trays
- Verify counts, weights, and documentation of incoming/outgoing shipments
- Identify and document damaged materials and shortages; escalate issues as needed
- Coordinate and prioritize daily shipping and receiving activities to meet deadlines
Material Handling & Equipment Use
- Safely operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment
- Transport materials to designated areas using appropriate tools (hand truck, electric dolly, etc.)
- Assist machine operators by moving or lifting materials manually or with hoists
- Stack, organize, and assemble materials for optimal workflow and storage
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Ensure adherence to company safety policies and OSHA standards
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and identify process inefficiencies
- Support audits and ensure compliance with internal and external standards
Administrative & Coordination
- Complete required reports, documentation, and system updates accurately
- Communicate effectively with internal teams including production, quality, and logistics
- Assist leadership with inventory tracking, cycle counts, and reporting
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- 2–4 years of related experience in material handling, shipping/receiving, or warehouse operations
- Prior experience in a lead or informal leadership role preferred
- Forklift certification (required)
- Strong knowledge of shipping practices and material handling methods
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the metal fabrication or manufacturing industry
- Familiarity with international shipping requirements and documentation
- Experience with inventory systems or warehouse management systems (WMS)
