About the Role
Grounds Work CT is looking for an experienced Landscaping Operations Manager / Working Foreman to lead our crew and manage day-to-day field operations.
This is a hands-on position. You will work alongside the crew performing landscaping, hardscaping, property maintenance, and snow removal while also providing leadership, assigning work, managing equipment, and keeping projects on schedule.
This is not an office-based management role. The right person must be physically capable of completing the work, confidently operating machinery, and showing the crew how the job should be done.
Applicants must have previous landscaping leadership experience and be able to operate the required machinery. This position is not suitable for someone seeking an office-only management role.
Responsibilities
- Work alongside the crew on landscaping, hardscape, maintenance, and snow removal jobs.
- Lead and supervise employees throughout the workday.
- Assign daily tasks and clearly communicate job expectations.
- Ensure the crew leaves the shop on time with the correct equipment, tools, and materials.
- Operate landscaping and construction machinery as part of daily fieldwork.
- Train employees on proper work methods and safe equipment operation.
- Monitor the quality, productivity, and safety of the crew.
- Keep jobs moving efficiently and ensure work is completed on schedule.
- Lead hardscape projects from site preparation through completion.
- Coordinate and participate in snow plowing, sanding, salting, and deicing.
- Inspect trucks, trailers, machines, and landscaping equipment regularly.
- Manage preventive maintenance and coordinate equipment repairs.
- Identify equipment problems and complete basic troubleshooting when possible.
- Track tools, materials, fuel, and supplies.
- Assist with labor planning, material requirements, and job estimates.
- Communicate job progress, staffing concerns, and equipment problems to ownership.
- Maintain clean, organized, and properly stocked trucks, trailers, and work areas.
Required Experience and Qualifications
- Previous experience leading or managing a landscaping crew.
- Strong commercial and residential landscaping experience.
- Hands-on hardscape installation experience.
- Snow removal and ice management experience.
- Experience managing and maintaining landscaping equipment.
- Ability to safely operate skid steers, mini excavators, zero-turn mowers, commercial walk-behind mowers, snowplows, spreaders, and trailers.
- Ability to diagnose basic equipment problems and oversee routine maintenance.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to hold employees accountable while maintaining a respectful work environment.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in changing weather conditions.
- Availability during early mornings, evenings, weekends, and snow events when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience estimating landscaping or hardscape projects.
- Experience managing commercial landscaping properties.
- Knowledge of grading, drainage, irrigation, planting, and property maintenance.
- CDL or experience driving trucks with trailers.
