JOB DESCRIPTION
As a Specialty Vehicle Upfit Technician at Grounded, you will utilize your knowledge, experience, craftsmanship and creativity to build beautiful and functional components for our customers. You will pioneer new designs and manufacturing techniques to push the envelope of interior and body construction and aesthetics. You are experienced in many different types of fabrication including some of the following: welding, sheet metal, composites, soft goods, electronics and/or prototyping, and enjoy new challenges and learning quickly. You are a skilled craftsperson that knows how to execute efficiently and lead complete projects end to end.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the fabrication of prototype and production hardware, including electrical wiring, metal fabrication, electromechanical assembly, plumbing, carpentry and basic CNC work.
- Prototype custom parts for our modular mechanical and electric systems, focusing on optimizing mechanical properties and material efficiency.
- Reading, interpreting and writing engineering drawings, giving feedback on design and manufacturability improvements.
- Perform work according to procedures, specifications, and test instructions. Assist in writing documentation for builds and designs when needed.
- Skilled in using construction and mechanical hand and power tools, as well as measurement tools.
- Design basic tools, jigs, fixtures, etc and fabricate them where needed.
- Support building and maintenance of the shop, including specifying equipment and tools, floor layout, and commissioning tools/machines.
- Help to establish the company's safety culture, manufacturing processes, and high quality bar.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED
- 3 years of combined experience in prototype fabrication and/or shop experience, or equivalent
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Trade school or Bachelor’s degree
- Ability to both read and create engineering drawings.
- Demonstrated prototyping and quick iteration experience.
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
- Experience with a wide variety of equipment and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed
- Ability to perform hands-on work in all environments (heat, cold, rain), in tight quarters or at heights
- Ability to focus while working in hazardous conditions and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Ability to lift up to 45lbs unassisted
COMPENSATION
This role will be compensated with competitive hourly pay, 5 days paid sick time, and the opportunity to come on full-time for the right candidates.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
This role is an in-person role in Detroit. We are located in Corktown, right next to the Michigan train station on the Ford-backed Michigan Central campus at 2059 Saint Anne.
