Position Overview
The Structural Steel Project Manager oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of projects involving structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and bridge components. This role ensures all work meets project specifications, safety expectations, and relevant industry standards—including AISC, AWS, and applicable state DOT requirements. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical knowledge of steel fabrication and erection practices, excellent communication skills, and proven experience managing complex steel construction projects.
Key ResponsibilitiesProject Planning & Coordination
- Manage structural steel, misc metals, and bridge component projects from contract award through final completion.
- Review project contracts, drawings, specifications, and addenda to identify scope, critical details, and required standards.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, procurement plans, and progress reports.
- Coordinate with engineering, detailing, fabrication, purchasing, and field teams to ensure accurate and efficient workflow.
- Lead and document project meetings with clients, GCs, subcontractors, inspectors, and internal departments.
- Identify risks, resolve issues, and implement corrective actions to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
Technical Oversight (Structural Steel, Misc Metals, and Bridge Components)
- Oversee fabrication and installation of:
- Structural steel framing and assemblies
- Miscellaneous metals (stairs, rails, ladders, platforms, ornamental metals, embeds, etc.)
- Bridge components (girders, diaphragms, bearings, connections, bracing, etc.)
- Ensure compliance with AISC standards, including:
- AISC 303 – Code of Standard Practice
- AISC 360 – Specification for Structural Steel Buildings
- AISC 341 – Seismic Provisions, where applicable
- AISC Certification requirements for fabrication and erection
- Ensure welding meets AWS D1.1 and other applicable codes.
- Review and approve shop drawings, erection drawings, and engineering submittals.
- Evaluate RFIs, change orders, field conditions, and design modifications.
Quality Control & Compliance
- Verify that fabrication meets dimensional tolerances, material requirements, coating systems, and QA/QC procedures.
- Work with inspectors, engineers, and DOT representatives to ensure project compliance.
- Maintain project documentation, including submittals, test reports, weld maps, mill certs, NCRs, and close-out packages.
Field Coordination
- Support field crews and erection subcontractors with logistics, sequencing, safety coordination, and problem-solving.
- Assist with crane plans, delivery schedules, site access, and installation procedures.
- Conduct site visits to monitor progress, quality, and safety.
Cost Control & Contract Administration
- Track project costs, change orders, and labor/material quantities.
- Prepare billing documentation and support financial forecasting.
- Negotiate with vendors and subcontractors for pricing, delivery, and scope alignment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (preferred).
- 3–7 years of project management experience in structural steel, misc metals, or bridge fabrication/erection.
- Strong understanding of AISC, AWS, and relevant DOT specifications.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, weld symbols, specifications, and shop drawings.
- Proficiency with project management software (Procore, Bluebeam, MS Project, etc.).
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in fast-paced environments and manage multiple projects concurrently.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to walk fabrication shops, construction sites, and bridge structures.
- Occasional lifting of materials or equipment up to 25 lbs.
- Travel to job sites, client meetings, and project locations as needed.
