The Grier School, an all girls’ boarding/day school outside of Tyrone, PA in the mountainside village of Birmingham has openings due to a growing enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year. Grier is internationally and nationally known. Class sizes average between 8-10 students. Resident Advisors are responsible for utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success. They provide a nurturing and supportive environment that addresses personal and social development for all students
Division/Department: Student Life
Reports to: Dean of Students & Belonging
Essential Duties and Responsibilities, including, but not limited to:
· Weekday Duties
o Willingness to work a boarding rotating schedule following Grier’s faculty calendar
o Conduct daily room and bathroom checks to ensure students are maintaining cleanly, safe, and respectful living conditions
o Enter point deductions and additions in student’s Community Conduct Report (formerly Deportment system)
o Be a palpable, positive presence in common areas, on hallways, & in the dormitories
· Weekend Duties
o Lead dorm activities empowering our students to become more involved
o These can be approved and run on an individual floor basis, offered to the student body, and/or be under the supervision of the Activities Director or a Dean
o Be prepared to participate in Dorm War events, Green-Gold competitions, & other school spirit activities
o Each dorm is responsible for hosting/participating in at least one event per month
· Student Supervision & Mentoring
o Ease our students transition of living away from home while creating a sense of community in their dorm/residence hall
o Assess students’ attributes and help them realize strengths
o Maintain safety & security of students regarding arrivals, departures, emotional/social concerns, and address issues with appropriate Dean as they arise
o Assist with Check Ins on dorm floors & at Welcome Home Cabin
· Communication & Collaboration
o Hold monthly floor/dorm meetings to establish rules and expectations along with improving student connectivity
o Provide appropriate information to the Deans and Counsellors related to student concerns and needs
o Be the first step in mediation processes between roommates, in competitive conflicts, and/or in homesick situations
· Health & Well-Being
o Enforces the rules of the dorm/floor to help maintain safety and wellness on campus
o Follow procedures and provide guidance pertaining to safety, wellness, and community-based concerns that may arise in the dorm
o Respond to crisis situations immediately ensuring safety of students, involving Head of School, Health Center Personnel, Counselors, & Deans as needed
o Assist with Dinner Check ins
· Community Building & Engagement
o Work to lift up other women as well as be a role model for our students
o Conduct Bi-weekly meetings with Prefects to discuss policies, concerns, and plan dorm activities
· Responsiveness, Accountability, Security, & Problem-Solving
o Follow the Residential Life and Student Handbooks
o Assist students with organization, time management and following the school schedule
o Support students in attending sports, study hall, tutoring, reporting to the infirmary for medication, and/or arriving in a timely fashion to other mandatory events
o Help students with arrival and departure procedural lists including checking in/out procedures, packing, storage, and shipping
· Multicultural Awareness & Inclusivity
o Foster equal opportunity practices and encourage students’ association with one another and all things Grier
o Pay attention to cultural or societal differences in dealing with students
· Attend trainings in August & January as well as other professional development opportunities offered
· Additional duties as assigned by Head of School, Dean of Students and Belonging, and Activities Director
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree preferred
· Proven Experience in working with children
· Integrity and professionalism
· Ability to cooperate within a wide range of student personalities and backgrounds
· Excellent communication skills and high emotional intelligence abilities
· Basic computer skills
· CPR/First Aid/AED Certification required
· Capable of lifting 25 pounds
· Able to assist students with injury as needed
