Safety Specialist Civil/Substation

Job Summary

The Safety Specialist Civil/Substation will oversee utility construction operations, focusing on preventing job-related accidents in transmission, distribution, and substation projects. This role involves traveling across Southeast region and nearby areas to monitor field operations, identify hazardous activities, and ensure compliance with occupational safety and health standards. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, analytical, and proactive in safety prevention. They should be capable of independently developing safety plans based on customer requirements with minimal supervision.  

Job Duties

1.      Advise on provisions to minimize safety risks 

2.      Conduct safety inspections, observations, investigations and regulatory compliance for OSHA and DOT 

3.      Communicates, coaches and trains crews on the current HSE work practices and rules, policies and procedures. 

4.      Prepares reports for management team reviews on observations pertaining to work activities, investigations, employee injuries/property/utility damage incidents. 

5.      Enforce OSH (occ. safety & health) policies (e.g. accident reporting process) 

6.      Coordinate drug screening (Randoms (DOT & NON), post-accident, reasonable suspicion) 

7.      Direct accident investigation procedures 

8.      Keep detailed records of safety-related incidents and propose corrective actions 

9.      Keep Safety databases up to date with current information as clients require. ISnet, Veriforce, and Avatta to name a few. 

10.  Complete any safety pre-qualifications required by potential clients 

11.  Communicate daily with Gridtech senior personnel, superintendents on safety needs/requirements  

12.  Collaborate with managers to monitor compliance and identify safety issues 

13.  Intervene in unsafe activities or operations 

14.  Liaise with and report to PGS Safety Director on OSH matters 

15.  Other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

Education and Experience

·        BSc/BA in business administration, Safety or relevant field 

·        ET&D or Civil Safety: 5-10 years  

Knowledge and Skills

·        Proven experience as safety specialist in the power construction industry 

·        In-depth knowledge of OSH guidelines and practices 

·        Experience in reporting and developing policies 

·        OSHA 30 Training 

·        CUSP certification, or must be able to attain within 6 months of hire date 

·        Experience in implementing OSH training programs 

·        Proficient in MS Office 

·        Excellent communication and advisory skills 

·        Diligent with an analytical mind 

·        MVR qualifies individual to be an approved company driver 

·        Pass pre-employment drug screen 

Working Conditions

·        Office/Field 50% travel may be required.
