Outside Plant Technician

Position Summary

Gridley Telephone Co. is seeking a motivated and dependable Outside Plant Technician to join our team. This position is responsible for maintaining, installing, troubleshooting, and repairing telecommunications services and outside plant infrastructure. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, solving technical problems, providing excellent customer service, and contributing to a team-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

Outside Plant Maintenance & Service

• Respond to and resolve service outages and trouble tickets.
• Complete JULIE locate requests accurately and within required timeframes.
• Install, modify, and remove telecommunications services as scheduled.
• Perform preventative maintenance on outside plant facilities and equipment.
• Troubleshoot and restore interrupted or degraded services.

Customer Service

• Communicate professionally with customers regarding the scope of work and expected completion times.
• Test and verify service functionality before leaving each job site.
• Maintain a clean and safe work area during and after service completion.

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
• Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Utilize proper utility locating, traffic control, and safe work practices.
• Report unsafe conditions, accidents, and near-miss incidents immediately.

Documentation & Communication

• Accurately document completed work, repairs, and locates.
• Maintain communication with coworkers and supervisors throughout the workday.
• Respond promptly to phone calls and work-related communications.
• Maintain organized records and submit receipts and required paperwork promptly.

Vehicle & Equipment Care

• Maintain service vehicles, tools, and equipment in a clean and organized condition.
• Ensure tools, materials, and batteries are stocked, charged, and ready for use.
• Monitor fuel levels and always maintain operational readiness.

On-Call Responsibilities

• Participate in an on-call rotation as assigned.
• Respond promptly to emergency service notifications.
• Troubleshoot and restore services during after-hours outages and emergencies.

Qualifications

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Experience in telecommunications, utilities, construction, fiber, cable, electrical, or a related technical field is preferred but not required.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment safely.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials.
• Ability to walk, bend, climb, and perform physically demanding tasks as needed.
• Must be able to safely operate company vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass applicable pre-employment screenings.
• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to after-hours service needs.
