Electric Utility Power Storm Damage Assessor (Contractor)

Grid Electric is rapidly growing and expanding in the Electrical Utility Transmission, Distribution, & Substation sector throughout the South Central, Southeast, Northeast, & Midwestern United States. We thrive on providing exceptional support to our customers and seeking professional Storm Damage Assessors with a minimum of 5 years of experience in utility distribution, transmission, & substation systems (operations, engineering, or construction).

This is a 1099 Contractor Position - On-call - Per Storm Event

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Able to identify primary and secondary electrical facilities, including poles, direct wires, secondary wires, services, primary insulators, transformers, fuses, reclosers, regulators, OCBs, substations, etc.
  • Able to identify vegetation hazards, unsafe work conditions, crew type, sizes, and equipment for restoration.
  • Conduct all work duties safely and adhere to all safety standards, regulations, and policies.
  • Familiar with knowledge of electrical distribution and transmission safety rules and procedures.
  • Able to identify the difference between electrical, Cablevision, and telephone lines.
  • Able to troubleshoot and identify all hazards with energized and on-energized primary and secondary voltages.
  • Lead on a two-person team (1 Assessor and 1 Driver) assigned to patrol distribution lines damaged by ice, wind, or other causes. If you can provide a driver please inform the hiring manager, pay is $30.00 per hour with a vehicle per diem rate of $5.00 per hour additional utilizing their own vehicle.
  • Identify all necessary repairs required for restoration.
  • Able to read and follow distribution circuit maps noting facilities need repair.
  • Complete detailed client damage reports and take careful notes of damage assessment.
  • Able to use binoculars, cell phones, and client radios as needed.
  • Be available for work the daily hours required by the utility’s work schedule and until completion of the restoration work and released by the utility.
  • Be able to stand and scout through various terrain and weather conditions.
  • Complete any follow-up work required by utility, sweeps, etc.
  • Work with integrity.

Position Requirements:

The position requires someone physically capable of walking out power line right of way under various weather and terrain conditions. Weather conditions may include snow, ice, rain, wind, or high heat/humidity. The terrain conditions may include but are not limited to off-road rural areas in swampy or overgrown ways, mountainous terrain.

Other Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in utility distribution or transmission systems (engineering, operations, or construction) preferred will take experienced fiber or cable tower workers.
  • Must be physically capable of walking out power line right of ways under various weather and terrain conditions described in the above position description.

Desired Qualifications:

Grid Electric will provide the Storm Damage Assessor will have the following items before reporting for damage assessment duty:

  • Hard hat
  • Safety glasses
  • Reflective vest (class III)
  • Work Gloves
  • Personal Voltage Detector (PVD)

The Storm Damage Assessor must provide electrical rated steel or composite toed boots, work jeans, long sleeve shirts, jackets, face masks, etc.

Physical Demands:

The contractor must meet the physical demands described to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.

While performing the duties of this job, the contractor is regularly required to talk or hear. The contractor is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to fingers, handle to feel, and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment:

While performing this job's duties, the contractor is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The contractor is occasionally exposed to various extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
