Position Summary

The Golf Course Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and servicing the equipment used to maintain the golf course and surrounding grounds. This position plays an important role in keeping all turf equipment, utility vehicles, mowers, irrigation-related equipment, and other maintenance machinery in safe, reliable, and proper operating condition.

The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills, take pride in their work, and be able to work independently while supporting the overall goals of the Golf Course Maintenance Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform routine maintenance, inspections, adjustments, and repairs on golf course maintenance equipment.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and engine-related problems.
• Maintain and repair reel mowers, rotary mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, aerators, sprayers, topdressers, and other turf equipment.
• Sharpen, grind, adjust, and maintain mower reels, bed knives, and cutting units to proper specifications.
• Perform preventative maintenance according to manufacturer recommendations and the golf course maintenance department's schedule.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment repairs, preventative maintenance, parts used, and service performed.
• Inspect equipment regularly to identify potential problems before they result in major repairs or downtime.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe equipment shop and work area.
• Keep tools, equipment, and shop facilities properly maintained.
• Assist the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent with equipment planning, repair priorities, and replacement recommendations.
• Work closely with the maintenance staff to ensure equipment is available and operating properly when needed.
• Assist with emergency repairs and equipment breakdowns during critical maintenance operations.
• Maintain appropriate inventories of commonly used parts, filters, lubricants, belts, blades, and other supplies.
• Operate equipment when necessary to diagnose mechanical issues or assist with golf course maintenance operations.
• Follow all OSHA, manufacturer, and club safety procedures.
• Properly handle fuels, lubricants, batteries, chemicals, and other maintenance-related materials.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent.

Qualifications

• Previous mechanical experience preferred, particularly with small engines, diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, or turf equipment.
• Golf course maintenance equipment experience is preferred but not required.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs.
• Basic knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to use common mechanic's tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to read and understand equipment manuals and maintenance specifications.
• Valid driver's license preferred.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple repair priorities.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to lift equipment parts and materials and perform physical work as required.
• Willingness to work outdoors and occasionally work early mornings, weekends, or extended hours during major golf course maintenance projects or emergencies.

Preferred Skills

• Experience working on Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, Club Car, E-Z-GO, or similar turf equipment.
• Experience with reel grinding and cutting-unit setup.
• Experience with diesel and gasoline engines.
• Knowledge of hydraulic systems and electrical diagnostics.
• Welding and fabrication experience.
• Computer and equipment diagnostic experience.
• Previous golf course, sports turf, landscaping, agricultural, or equipment dealership experience.

Performance Expectations

The Golf Course Maintenance Mechanic is expected to:

• Keep equipment properly maintained and ready for daily use.
• Minimize equipment downtime through preventative maintenance and timely repairs.
• Complete repairs safely and correctly rather than simply returning equipment to service.
• Communicate equipment problems and repair needs promptly to the Superintendent.
• Maintain accurate service records.
• Keep the maintenance shop organized, clean, and professional.
• Take ownership of the condition and reliability of the department's equipment.
• Work cooperatively with the entire Golf Course Maintenance Department.

Working Conditions

This position involves working both indoors in a maintenance shop and outdoors on the golf course. The employee may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, dust, noise, fuel, lubricants, chemicals, and other normal golf course maintenance conditions.

The position requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, climbing, reaching, and occasionally working in confined or awkward positions while servicing equipment.

• Operate company vehicles safely for equipment transport or maintenance tasks as needed.
• Conduct repairs on air conditioning units, refrigeration systems, HVAC components, and various mechanical equipment to minimize downtime.
• Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs performed, and parts used in compliance with operational procedures.
• Collaborate with team members to improve maintenance processes and ensure safety protocols are followed at all times.

Requirements

• Proven experience as a service technician or maintenance mechanic with a strong background in appliance repair, HVAC system repair, refrigeration, and mechanical systems repair.
• Knowledge of schematics, technical manuals, HVAC & appliance technology is essential for diagnosing issues efficiently.
• Hands-on experience with appliance installation and kitchen equipment maintenance is highly desirable.
• Ability to operate equipment repair tools safely and effectively in construction or industrial environments.
• Strong mechanical knowledge combined with excellent problem-solving skills to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues swiftly.
• Experience working with maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) procedures in diverse settings.
• Valid driver’s license with experience operating company vehicles safely.
• Excellent customer service skills to communicate effectively with team members and clients when needed.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team in fast-paced environments while maintaining attention to detail.
