Safety Technician – Heavy Civil & Mission Critical Construction

Company: Gregory Construction
Position Type: Full-Time | Field-Based
Location: Project-Based / Multiple States
Travel: Extensive Travel Required

Build Safely. Lead in the Field.

Gregory Construction is seeking an experienced Safety Technician to support our heavy civil and mission-critical construction projects across multiple regions.

This is a field-based, travel-intensive position. Candidates must be comfortable traveling extensively, working at active project sites, and staying near projects for extended periods. This is not an office-based safety position.

The ideal candidate has hands-on construction safety experience and is comfortable working directly with Superintendents, Project Managers, and field crews to identify hazards, enforce safety expectations, and help ensure everyone goes home safely each day.

Our projects include underground utilities, excavation, trenching, concrete, earthwork, site development, and large-scale mission-critical construction.

What You'll Do

As a Safety Technician, you'll be actively involved in day-to-day field operations and serve as a safety resource for project leadership and crews.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implement and maintain Site-Specific Safety Plans (SSSPs).
  • Conduct daily jobsite inspections, safety audits, and hazard assessments.
  • Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and work with field leadership to implement corrective actions.
  • Lead and participate in toolbox talks, pre-task planning, and Task Hazard Analysis (THA) discussions.
  • Monitor high-risk construction activities, including excavation, trenching, fall protection, heavy equipment operations, and underground utility work.
  • Work closely with Superintendents and Project Managers to plan work safely and address changing jobsite conditions.
  • Support incident and near-miss investigations, root cause analysis, documentation, and corrective action planning.
  • Maintain accurate and timely safety records, inspection reports, training documentation, and other required records.
  • Coach field employees on safe work practices and reinforce company safety expectations.
  • Support employee safety orientations and field training.
  • Mentor junior safety personnel as needed.
  • Communicate safety concerns clearly and professionally with employees, subcontractors, clients, and project leadership.
  • Support projects in multiple states and regions based on operational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • 3 years of construction safety experience, preferably within heavy civil, civil infrastructure, industrial, or mission-critical construction.
  • OSHA 30 certification required.
  • Strong working knowledge of construction safety practices and OSHA requirements.
  • Experience supporting high-risk construction activities such as:
    • Excavation and trenching
    • Underground utility installation
    • Fall protection
    • Heavy equipment operations
    • Earthwork and civil construction
  • Experience conducting jobsite safety inspections and identifying potential hazards.
  • Experience leading safety meetings, toolbox talks, pre-task planning, or THAs.
  • Ability to confidently address unsafe conditions and enforce safety expectations in the field.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with craft employees, Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and company leadership.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively and remain near active project sites for extended assignments.

Professional Safety Certification

Candidates must currently hold at least one of the following certifications:

  • CHST – Construction Health and Safety Technician
  • GSP – Graduate Safety Practitioner
  • CSP – Certified Safety Professional

Applicants who do not currently hold at least one of these certifications will not meet the minimum requirements for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Additional OSHA or construction safety certifications.
  • Degree or additional education in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Previous safety experience on heavy civil, underground utility, data center, or mission-critical projects.
  • Experience working with excavation and trenching operations.
  • Experience supporting projects with large field crews and multiple subcontractors.

What to Expect

This position is designed for someone who wants to be in the field and close to the work.

You should expect:

  • Frequent travel to projects in multiple states and regions.
  • Extended stays near active project sites.
  • Daily interaction with field crews and construction leadership.
  • Exposure to fast-paced, large-scale heavy civil and mission-critical construction.
  • Changing project assignments based on company and client needs.
  • A role where you'll be expected to speak up, address hazards, and take ownership of safety concerns.

Successful candidates will be comfortable building relationships with field teams while also having the confidence to hold employees and leadership accountable to safety expectations.

Compensation & Benefits

Gregory Construction offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • Competitive pay
  • Paid Time Off (PTO)

  • 401(k) with company match
