POSITION SUMMARY:

The Early Learning Assistant Teacher at the YMCA of Greenwich is essential in creating a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment for young children. This position supports the Lead and Head Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate activities that foster learning in literacy, arts, math, science, and physical development. The Assistant Teacher ensures children's health and safety, builds strong relationships with families, and maintains a clean and organized classroom. REPORTS TO:

Director of Education Programs / Head Teacher

PAY RANGE:

$18/hour – $20/hour (based on experience and certification)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children through close supervision.
  • Assist the Head Teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate lessons and activities, including literacy, arts, math, cooking, science, and recreation.
  • Support students in their academic growth.
  • Actively communicate and engage with parents and families through various formats (e.g., technology apps, verbal interactions, written communication).
  • Collaborate as a supportive team member within the Early Childhood Learning Center.
  • Maintain a clean and safe classroom environment by identifying and addressing potential hazards.
  • Prepare food and create a family-style eating environment that fosters language, cognitive, and social development.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, including incident reports, attendance sheets, and parent surveys.
  • Manage equipment, storage, and supply inventory as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with YMCA, Department of Health, and OEC guidelines.
  • Participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma/GED and/or a study plan; Teacher Assistant certificate preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience working with young children in a group setting.
  • Knowledge of child development, early childhood education, and CT Early Learning and Development standards.
  • Willingness to learn and support curriculum implementation.
  • Emotional maturity, flexibility, and patience with respect for children and adults.
  • Must pass BCIS/OEC medical examination and meet other OEC requirements.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Regularly use a computer for extended periods and communicate via devices.
  • Remain active throughout the workday (e.g., walking, engaging with children).
  • Move around the classroom to assist and supervise children in daily activities.
  • React quickly to safety issues (e.g., climbing, aggressive behavior).
  • Lift young children and objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
  • Demonstrate emotional regulation, remaining calm and respectful in stressful situations (e.g., upset children or parents).
  • The noise level in the work environment may vary based on activities and location.
  • Reasonable accommodations available for qualified individuals
