Job Title: CNC Apprentice
Job Summary
The CNC Machinist Apprentice assists in the setup, operation, and maintenance of CNC milling and turning machines while completing a formal apprenticeship program. Working under the guidance of experienced machinists, the apprentice will gain hands-on experience and technical training needed to become a skilled CNC Machinist capable of producing precision parts for tools, dies, and fixtures. Apprentices will start on 1st shift for 1-2 years to gain experience and then transfer to night shift for 6.5 year period or otherwise negotiated.
Key Responsibilities
- Learn to set up and operate CNC mills following detailed instructions.
- Assist in loading/unloading parts, selecting tooling, and installing fixtures.
- Read and interpret part drawings, blueprints, and CNC programs (G-code).
- Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools to ensure accuracy.
- Monitor machine operations and make minor adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Clean machines and maintain a safe, organized work area.
- Record time, materials, and completed tasks as part of apprenticeship documentation.
- Attend related technical instruction (RTI) classes and complete required coursework.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear proper PPE in the machine shop.
- Communicate with mentors and supervisors to improve understanding and skills.
Required Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Enrollment in or willingness to enter a certified CNC Machinist Apprenticeship Program.
- Strong interest in machining, manufacturing, or mechanical trades.
- Basic understanding of shop math, measurement tools, and mechanical concepts.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and ask questions when needed.
- Dependable attendance, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn.
Physical demands:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical activities such as standing, bending, and kneeling.
- Must be comfortable working in a machine shop environment (noise, grease, metal shavings, etc.).
- Use of PPE (safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, hearing protection) required.
Work environment: Manufacturing environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
