Position Summary

The Assistant Superintendent for Land & Grounds Maintenance works directly with the Director/Superintendent for Land, Buildings and Maintenance to oversee and coordinate all aspects of land stewardship across the 400 acre property, including horticulture and landscape operations, natural areas, and plant and wildlife habitat management. In partnership with the Director and key staff, this role plans, prioritizes, and directs day-to-day and seasonal work to ensure the grounds, gardens, trails, and related infrastructure are maintained to a high standard, while identifying current and future maintenance, conservation, and technical needs for the property, equipment, and resources. This role will be responsible for managing vendor relationships, maintaining budgets, and ensuring that inspections are performed on a regular basis.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Land Management and Maintenance

  • Coordinates with the Foreman on the day-to-day grounds’ maintenance operations throughout the entire property.
  • · Plans, supervises and performs all aspects of daily land maintenance including mowing, lawn care and tree management.
  • · Manages and performs the pruning and removal of trees, shrubs, and hedges.
  • · Implements and adjusts programs, including fertilization schedules, soil amendments, and turf and tree health monitoring.
  • · Responsible for the proper upkeep of the Woodland and Arboretum Trails.
  • · Responsible for the proper upkeep of roads, sidewalks, parking lots, and other grounds features.
  • · Responsible for coordinating and performing snow removal throughout the property, including all roads, sidewalks, pathways and parking lots.
  • · Responsible for irrigation system performance and maintenance, including seasonal startup, shutdown, and monitoring and making repairs as necessary.
  • · Ensures the safe operation and upkeep of all maintenance equipment and tools, including trucks, cars, tractors, and other utility vehicles.
  • · Operates power equipment and heavy equipment including dump trucks, plows, backhoes, tractors, skid steers, and mowers.
  • · Utilizes ArcGIS and related tools to support land management documentation, mapping, inventories, and recordkeeping.

Horticulture Responsibilities

  • Coordinates with the Horticulture Manager on the day-to-day horticultural operations for gardens, lawns, ornamental landscapes, and planted areas.

Conservation & Wildlife Stewardship

  • · Coordinates with the Naturalist on land stewardship and conservation priorities that protect and enhance natural areas, ecosystems, and wildlife habitat.
  • · Advises on native grasses implementation throughout the property, including continuous upkeep.

Leadership and Management

  • · Manages staff in the Land, Horticulture and Grounds department with respect to hiring, performance management, disciplinary action, and termination of employment.
  • · Identifies and provides coaching, mentoring, and training for the Land, Horticulture and Grounds staff to enhance employee professional development and add value to the Foundation.
  • · Collaborates cross-functionally with Foundation leadership and administrative teams to support priorities.
  • · Identifies maintenance or capital needs and recommends corrective actions to the Director; coordinates with Foundation staff to schedule and implement approved work.
  • · Assists the Director in managing materials and makes recommendations for purchasing supplies and equipment as needed and within the department’s budget.
  • Assists the Director in the development of the annual operational budget, and monitors and reports spending throughout the fiscal year.
  • Serves as primary liaison with contractors to coordinate schedules for routine maintenance and special projects to minimize disruption to facility operations and event activity.

General Property Maintenance

  • · Required to live on the property.
  • · Performs special projects or duties as needed.
  • · On call for conferences, guests’ needs and general property after-hour emergencies.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Ability to identify landscaping and maintenance issues and propose solutions.
  • Implementation of health and safety regulations related to grounds maintenance.
  • Demonstrated leadership and staff development capabilities.
  • · Highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple initiatives.
  • · Proven ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and produce quality results on time.
  • · Proven ability to collaborate effectively across departments and organizational levels.
  • · Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • · Competency in computer skills including Microsoft Office.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to walk outdoor properties, including uneven terrain, for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally (such as tools, samples, or equipment).
  • Frequent standing, bending, climbing, and reaching during site evaluations.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed and follow all safety procedures.

Work Environment

  • · Office and outside environment, where the employee could be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibrations.
  • · Could be exposed to extreme working conditions and loud noise levels and environments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • · Five years of experience in operations management, maintenance, and landscaping in a similar setting. Some education is a plus.
  • · More than three years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • · Proven experience operating heavy machinery including dump trucks, plows, backhoes, tractors, skid steers, and mowers.
  • · Valid Driver's License.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
