What does the role entail?

The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing the nursing department, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to residents, and maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. The DON will lead, mentor, and support the nursing team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and compassion. This role requires strong leadership, clinical expertise, and a commitment to improving resident outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Management: Oversee all nursing operations, including staffing, scheduling, and performance evaluations. Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to nursing staff to ensure a high-performing team.

  • Quality of Care: Ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate care to all residents in accordance with care plans, medical directives, and regulatory standards.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including those set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and state health departments.

  • Policy Development: Develop, implement, and evaluate nursing policies, procedures, and protocols to enhance operational efficiency and resident care quality.

  • Staff Development: Coordinate and facilitate ongoing training and professional development for nursing staff to ensure clinical competency and adherence to best practices.

  • Resident and Family Relations: Collaborate with residents, families, and interdisciplinary teams to address concerns, improve satisfaction, and promote a positive care environment.

  • Budget Oversight: Assist in developing and managing the nursing department budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high standards of care.

  • Quality Improvement: Lead quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives, including monitoring clinical outcomes, conducting audits, and implementing corrective actions as needed.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, therapists, administrators, and other departments to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care delivery.

  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks related to resident care and nursing operations, ensuring a safe environment for residents and staff.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration preferred.

  • Licensure: Current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State].

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role in a long-term care or rehabilitation setting.

  • Skills:

    • Strong leadership and team-building skills.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

    • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems and healthcare technology.

    • Knowledge of regulatory standards and compliance requirements (CMS, state health regulations).

    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions under pressure.

  • Certifications: Certified Director of Nursing in Long-Term Care (CDN-LTC) or similar certification preferred.

  • Other: Must pass a background check and drug screening.

Work Environment

  • The role requires working in a fast-paced healthcare environment with occasional evening, weekend, or on-call responsibilities.

  • Physical demands include standing, walking, and occasional lifting or assisting residents.
