TITLE: Occupational Therapist
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Occupational Therapy;
2. Certified or eligible for certification by the State Board of O.T. Examiners, Division of health
Related Boards to practice occupational therapy;
3. Educational preparation should include training in current pediatric evaluation and treatment
procedures and/or rehabilitation techniques;
4. Strong written, verbal, presentation and interpersonal skills;
5. Knowledgeable or make an immediate effort to become knowledgeable about:
a. The federal and state educational rules and regulations which directly affect the therapist's
role, rights and responsibilities as they relate to pupils, parents, teachers and administrators in
an educational setting.
b. Local educational mandates and philosophies as they relate to his/her role, rights and
responsibilities.
6. Interest in pediatrics or school-based therapy as demonstrated by attendance of relevant
continuing education courses;
7. Computer and assistive technology skills;
8. Must be able to communicate effectively in English;
9. Must be able to perform the essential functions and meet physical demands and other criteria
listed herein.
REPORTS TO: Special Education Supervisor
JOB GOAL: To provide school-based occupational therapy services to disabled children from 3 years to 21
years.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Screen, evaluate and assess students' occupational therapy needs and document results according
to established procedures;
2. Participate as a team member to address needs of students through an individualized education
plan (IEP) with appropriate goals and objectives;
3. Provide direct and consultative occupational therapy when indicated on a student's
individualized education program;
4. Evaluate and report student progress to members of the multidisciplinary team and attend
IEP-Team meetings as needed;
5. Consult with regular classroom teachers in order to facilitate generalization of therapy goals
and objectives;
6. Maintain appropriate records following federal, state and local school system regulations,
policies and procedures;
7. Design and construct special equipment and materials for students and suggest adaptations of
school-home environment;
8. Act as a resource person to other educational specialists in regard to gross and fine motor
programs and adaptations needed by students with disabilities;
9. Order and manage materials and supplies;
IO. Help students walk, board buses, properly use mobility aids and perform other physical
activities as their needs arise;
11. Maintain and update policies and procedures involving occupational therapy services;
12. Participate in continuing education relevant to occupational therapy in the schools;
13. Maintain communication with appropriate medical personnel;
14. Practice within the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics of the American Occupational
Therapy Association;
15. Interpret information to school personnel and parents;
16. Follow all board policies, school rules, and administrative regulations;
17. Is available to students and parents for educational related purposes outside the instructional
day when requested to do so;
18. Represent the school, the school system and the community in a positive manner;
19. Report to the principal when one knows or reasonably suspects that a child's health or welfare
has been or appears to have been harmed as a result of abuse or neglect;
20. Maintain confidentiality relative to students' records and procedures.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten, eleven or twelve month year. Salary and
work year to be established by the Board and Career Ladder status.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the
Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
