Job Overview
We are seeking a Mine Safety Manager to lead safety strategy, compliance, and culture across our surface mines, Mountaineer No. 1 underground mine, and prep plant — owning the safety program from policy through daily field execution and MSHA/WVOMHST relations.
Duties
- Direct site-wide safety programs across all Greenbrier Smokeless surface, underground, and prep plant operations.
- Serve as primary contact for MSHA/WVOMHST inspections, citations, and corrective action tracking.
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and preventive action closure across all sites.
- Coordinate 30 CFR Parts 46/48 New Miner, Refresher, and Task Training for employees and contractors.
- Conduct routine inspections of surface pits, underground sections, and the prep plant; verify hazard closure.
- Build and maintain emergency response and mine rescue readiness across operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Mine Engineering, or related field; 5 years relevant experience considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum 5 years progressive safety management experience in underground and/or surface coal mining.
- Certified MSHA Part 48 instructor (“blue card”), surface and underground, or ability to obtain within a defined period of hire.
- Thorough knowledge of MSHA 30 CFR Parts 46, 48, 75, 77, and WV Code §22A / WVOMHST requirements.
- Demonstrated experience managing MSHA/WVOMHST inspections, citations, and abatement processes.
- Preference given to candidates with prior Appalachian coal safety experience and established roots in the local area.
