Job Description
The principal is a vital member of the leadership team and should lead setting the vision for achieving and sustaining high levels of student growth. The principal leads strategic implementation of the school’s mission through effective leadership of all stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, parents, and the community. The principal effectively and efficiently oversees all aspects of the instructional program, school environment, and school operations.
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent in collaboration with other district leadership, the Principal serves as the instructional and operational leader of the school. The Principal leads the school’s Guiding Coalition and professional learning community in establishing and sustaining a clear vision for high levels of student growth and achievement.
The Principal is responsible for overseeing the instructional program, school culture, personnel, and daily operations of the school while modeling professionalism, ethical leadership, and a strong commitment to student success.
Essential Functions
1. Leading Teaching and Learning
The Principal will:
- Lead the school community as a professional learning community in alignment with the school district operating as a professional learning community.
- Articulate a clear and compelling vision founded in strong and sustainable student growth and achievement outcomes.
- Promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic, social, and behavioral growth and performance.
- Model and lead data-driven decision making and a continuous cycle of improvement in all aspects of the school.
- Ensure the implementation of the Science of Reading in all instruction in the school.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of elementary school programs including but not limited to curriculum, SoR, instructional practices, age and developmentally appropriate MTSS, etc., and apply such knowledge for strategic planning and continual school improvement.
- Participate in all team meetings, ensuring that team meetings are planned and facilitated through the four Professional Learning Community questions.
2. Professionalism
The Principal will:
- Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, and school personnel.
- Serve as a role model for students through exhibiting professionalism, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession.
- Consistently use effective and productive soft skills with all school district stakeholders.
- Establish and maintain professional, respectful relationships with students, staff, parents, and community members.
3. Executive Leadership
The Principal will:
- Lead the school’s Guiding Coalition.
- Promote distributive leadership while demonstrating and modeling strong educational leadership and decision making.
- Lead strategic implementation of district initiatives and ensure alignment between school practices and district goals.
- Foster shared leadership among faculty and staff to strengthen school performance and culture.
4. School Culture
The Principal will:
- Foster a positive and productive school climate by assessing, planning, and communicating with the school community.
- Ensure facilitation of school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention System, including supporting assistant principal and staff in implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention System.
- Support and collaborate with the assistant principal to ensure high standards of student behavior.
- Ensure implementation of the district and school’s character development and social and emotional learning programs and initiatives.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, and student-centered learning environment.
5. Strategic Action Planning
The Principal will:
- Lead the school’s Student Intervention Team, including specific focuses on academic growth and learning, behavior support and interventions, trauma informed practices, mental health, and the whole child.
- Lead the implementation and monitoring of school improvement goals and action plans.
- Use data to evaluate programs, identify trends, and adjust strategies to improve student outcomes.
- Ensure systems of intervention and support are effective and responsive to student needs.
6. Management
The Principal will:
- Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation of the school consistent with its mission and goals including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly climate, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all laws, board policies, and district procedures.
- Oversee daily operations of the building to ensure efficiency, safety, and effectiveness.
- Coordinate resources and systems that support student learning and staff success.
7. Professional Development & Human Capital
The Principal will:
- Ensure staff growth that impacts student learning through staff support systems, including observations, feedback, and evaluation, with high levels of fidelity.
- Ensure implementation of the Arkansas model for teacher observation and evaluation with high levels of fidelity.
- Participate in and lead professional development as directed, including but not limited to adult learning around the Science of Reading, R.I.S.E, assessor training, differentiation, job-embedded curriculum development, leadership development, and evidence-based instructional practices.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and professional learning among staff.
