Job Summary:
The Wastewater Technician I is responsible for performing a variety of manual labor for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater collection system and treatment plant.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Ability to learn to perform manual work, to include installation of pipes and fittings, for the repair, and maintenance of wastewater systems.
2. Ability to learn to excavate and backfill trenches to complete repairs.
3. Ability to learn to load and unload trucks.
4. Ability to learn to stock vehicles with necessary equipment and material.
5. Ability to learn to clean, organize, and maintain facilities, tools and equipment.
6. Ability to learn to observe and promote all established safety procedures.
7. Ability to learn to assist with the set-up of work zone barricades and signs for traffic control.
8. Analyzes and monitors wastewater treatment system processes.
9. Collects, preserves, and properly stores samples for laboratory analysis.
10. Performs basic process control analysis by measuring dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, phosphorus, and chlorine, etc.
11. Calculates basic level mathematics.
12. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and public relations.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
· General physical requirements include lifting up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 105 pounds occasionally.
· Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope.
· Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations; and animals, snakes, and venomous insects.
· Operates a company vehicle daily.
· May be required to work hours other than regular daytime schedule.
· Available to be “on call” as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Skill in communicating with other district employees and the public by oral and written means.
· Skill in communicating with internal and external customers, contractors, and governmental agencies.
· Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment typically used in maintenance or construction.
· Knowledge of hazard and safety measures as they apply to the type of work being performed.
· Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
· Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job.
· Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
· Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.
· Ability to operate a personal computer.
· Ability to work in an indoor or outdoor environment.
· Incumbent is subject to chemical, electrical, and mechanical hazards.
Qualifying Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or GED
· Possession of a valid Class C Texas driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a Class A Texas commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 6 months of employment.
· Ability to obtain a Class D Texas wastewater treatment operator license within 6 months of employment.
· Proficient in the use of materials, tools, and equipment commonly used in construction, maintenance, or repair of wastewater collection systems.
