What are the responsibilities and job description for the Buyer position at GREEN MOUNTAIN CORPORATION?
We are looking for an experienced fashion/apparel buyer for our growing buying team. Our ideal candidate is a fashion-oriented winter clothing buyer that wants to help people make the most of their time on the snow. In addition, need to be excellent communicator, confident, and have a flair for negotiation, influencing people and networking.
Typical Work Activities:
Typical work activities can vary according to the season. For example: out of season, the majority of the time will be spent in the workplace, during the buying season, a significant amount of time will be spent away from the workplace in order to assemble a new collection of merchandise.
Throughout the year, tasks typically involve:
- Researching and analyzing trends
- Regularly reviewing (KPI’s) Key Performance Indicators
- Managing plans for stock levels, reacting to change in demand and logistics
- Effectively manage sales, margin, and markdowns
- Minimize stockouts while maximizing revenue and margin
- Liaising with other departments within the organization to ensure projects are completed
- Participating in promotional activities
- Liaising with store personnel to ensure product/collection supply meets demand and collaborate on visual merchandising
- Training and mentoring junior staff
- Meeting with vendors to negotiate terms, product mix, and marketing advertising dollars
- Work with marketing team to develop marketing plans and promotional calendar
- Maintaining relationships with existing suppliers and sourcing new suppliers for future products
Work Conditions:
- Salaries vary depending on experience
- Working hours are frequently longer than 8:30 to 5:00. You are generally expected to work until the job is completed and this may mean putting in extra hours.
- Buying is mostly office-based, although there are opportunities for travel throughout the year. Work is usually in a busy and lively atmosphere.
- Buyers often visit store locations and during the busy season are required to work in the stores to assist with sales.
- The role will involve frequent contact with wholesalers, manufacturers, and suppliers.
- Flexibility is important.
- Buyers have a high level of responsibility. This may lead to considerable stress.
- You will be required to travel to trade shows and to make on-site visits to vendors in order to source new products and to maintain relationships with current suppliers

Qualifications/Skills/Requirements:
Although this area of work is open to all we are looking for someone with preferably a Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of fashion/apparel buying/merchandising experience for multiple retail locations and e-commerce experience. Along with at least 2 years of ski/outdoor work-related experience is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in and commitment to winter sports.
Potential candidates will need to show evidence of the following:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office including Excel advanced functions (i.e. V look up, Pivot Tables, Macros, etc.) and a working knowledge of POS system are a must
