What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Staff Member - Overnight position at Green County Human Services?
FIELDS of Green County is a new emergency homeless shelter located in Monroe, Wisconsin. Residents can stay for 30 days, and can extend up to 90 consecutive days if they are participating in programming. At this time, the facility is open 5pm - 8am and has nine bedrooms and one dedicated crisis bedroom for emergency intakes. The facility is a community effort that is currently being operated by Green County Human Services.
This position will be hired by Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board (SWWDB) through its Leased Employee Program, on behalf of Green County Human Services. This is not a Green County position.
This recruitment is for a Shelter Staff Member - Overnight to work nights from 8pm - 8am. Weekend Availability is needed.
The Overnight Shelter Staff Member should be able to sleep after curfew/lights out (10pm - during Week, and 12am on Friday & Saturday) until 6am, as long as they can be awakened by knocking to assist residents and the phone if Law Enforcement has an emergency/crisis intake. While it is expected this position will be able to sleep as described above, it is not guaranteed.
Job Summary:
The Shelter Staff Member works independently to support the daily operations of the shelter by providing a welcoming, safe, and organized environment for residents, visitors, and volunteers. This position assists with resident intakes and orientations, enforces shelter guidelines, and helps mediate concerns or crises as they arise. The Shelter Staff Member maintains facility cleanliness, completes required documentation, supports residents in accessing resources, and communicates relevant information to staff to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery. This role plays a key part in fostering a respectful, secure, and supportive atmosphere within the shelter.
Essential Duties:
- Create a welcoming environment for new and returning residents, including greeting residents as they enter, orienting new residents to the shelter, and answering questions.
- Work effectively as a member of the shelter team, including maintaining open lines of communication, consulting about resident needs or situations, cooperating to complete tasks, and engaging in shared decision-making, as appropriate.
- Treat residents with respect and professionalism by practicing active listening, preserving guest confidentiality, avoiding power struggles, and maintaining patience in difficult situations.
- Communicate shelter rules and policies; set limits with residents as appropriate.
- Identify and intervene productively in emergency situations, including medical emergencies, mental health crises, and interpersonal conflicts.
- Work individually and as a member of the shelter team to engage in effective de-escalation.
- Engage in proactive and creative problem solving to maintain a safe environment and keep people engaged in the shelter programming.
- Engage in ongoing training, coaching, and education related to de-escalation, substance use, mental health symptoms, and other professional skills (provided by Green County Human Services).
- Maintain thorough and timely documentation of incidents, resident observations, in keeping with program guidelines.
- Coordinate with shelter case managers on individual resident housing plans as needed.
- Attend and participate productively in team meetings.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with residents, including refraining from engaging in social relationships or exchanging money/goods with residents. Report preexisting relationships that may cause a conflict of interest to management.
- Open and close shelter according to procedures; secure facility upon closing.
- Issue appropriate, respectful, and timely lights out and wake-up announcements.
- Issue blankets, sheets, and towels; distribute other supplies according to procedures.
- Assist with food preparation and kitchen cleanup, as needed.
- Perform nightly touch point and spot cleaning per guidelines.
- Sweep, mop, wipe surfaces, take out trash, and perform other cleaning tasks as required to maintain a safe and sanitary environment throughout the shift. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow appropriate protocols when cleaning bodily fluids.
- Assist with laundry and other facility and operation upkeep tasks as needed.
- Monitor all areas, including sleeping areas and restrooms.
- Complete shelter intake, as needed, including professionally and accurately documenting resident information and orienting new new residents to shelter policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Genuine desire to work with people experiencing homelessness, including those with mental illness and/or chemical dependency (experience working with these populations preferred).
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff and residents from various backgrounds.
- Belief that shelter is a human right.
- Ability and willingness to work effectively and professionally with residents displaying a wide range of challenging, unpleasant, and/or unusual behavior.
- Ability to compose thorough and accurate incident reports and other documentation.
