GI Technician (PRN)

The GI Technician assists physicians and nursing staff in the preparation, performance, and recovery of gastrointestinal procedures such as endoscopies and colonoscopies. This role ensures that equipment is properly prepared, maintained, and sterilized while supporting patient care throughout the procedure process.

Essential Job functions and responsibilities

  • Assists with patient care activities and related services under the supervision/delegation of the registered nurse and/or physician, including but not limited to intraprocedural support.
  • Assists physicians with endoscopic procedures, including accurate retrieval of specimens, specimen preservation, labeling, and transportation of specimens to the lab.
  • Assists in initiating and/or collaborating with the team for all safety initiatives, such as the timeout process, traceability of equipment used, and reporting of safety events.
  • Organizes and prepares procedure rooms and equipment according to each physician's specification, checking and assembling the proper instruments and equipment needed.
  • Performs high-level disinfection and reprocessing of equipment/scopes safely and effectively based on established standards.
  • Cleans, calibrates, operates, and performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and infection control policies and guidelines.
  • Reports and documents equipment repairs.
  • Documents procedures, images, videos, and patient charges utilizing the endoscope and ultrasound information systems.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory for the unit by informing the unit when supplies are needed, stocking supplies, and receiving ordered supplies.
  • Performs various clerical duties which may include answering of phones, filing, data entry, scheduling and compilation of patient records.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper techniques.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.

Nonessential Job Functions

  • Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor/department director.
  • Attend staff meetings or other company-sponsored or mandated meetings as required.


Job Competencies

  • Ability to Navigate/Utilize Electronic Medical Record
  • Understand/Comply with Hospital Policy and Procedures.
  • Maintains skill level by continuing education, collaborative training with co-workers and physicians and annual skills checkoffs.


Qualifications required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • SGNA Certification as a GI Technician or relevant healthcare experience is preferred AND/OR required within 6 months of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (or within a specified timeframe)
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and sterile techniques
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant: Vision (close, distance, color, peripheral, depth and ability to adjust focus); Hearing; Speaking; Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; Walk; Sit; Balance; Repetitive motions; Using arm, leg and back muscles for extended periods.
  • Frequent: Bend, Squat, Twist, Push/Pull up to 20 pounds without assistance; up to 50 with assistance; Lift/Carry up to 20 pounds without assistance; up to 50 pounds with assistance
  • Occasional: Climb, Kneel, Crouch, Distinguish Colors, Exposure to noise/high-pitched noise, Exposure to hazards, allergens, toxins/chemicals/detergents/radiation
  • Rarely: Exposure to potential electric shock; Work in confined area
  • Other: Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including gloves, gowns, goggles, masks.
  • Potential exposure to communicable disease.
  • Potential for cuts and bruises.

Work environment:

  • OSHA Category I: Normal routine involves exposure to blood, bodily fluid or tissue and as part of their employment.

Salary : $42,998 - $57,844
