Position Overview

The Greater Westfield Committee for the Homeless, Inc. is seeking an experienced Direct Care 2nd Shift Supervisor to provide leadership and operational oversight during evening hours at the Samaritan Inn.

The 2nd Shift Supervisor serves as the on-site leader during assigned shifts and is responsible for supervising Direct Care Counselors, coordinating evening shelter operations, responding to guest and staff concerns, and ensuring a safe, respectful, and structured environment.

We are seeking a dependable and confident leader who is comfortable supervising staff, making decisions, addressing challenging situations, and working directly with individuals experiencing homelessness.

Schedule

  • Full-time, approximately 40 hours per week
  • Primarily 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM
  • Rotating workdays throughout the week
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday availability based on the rotating schedule
  • Some flexibility may be required for meetings, training, emergencies, and operational needs

The Samaritan Inn operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to Direct Care Counselors.
  • Assign staff responsibilities and monitor completion of required duties.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and support to staff throughout the shift.
  • Address staff performance or conduct concerns and communicate significant issues to program leadership.
  • Oversee evening shelter operations, including guest admissions, meals, chores, showers, laundry, storage access, and guest accountability.
  • Ensure shelter policies, procedures, and expectations are consistently followed.
  • Respond to behavioral concerns, conflicts, emergencies, and other situations that arise during the shift.
  • Utilize appropriate crisis intervention, conflict-resolution, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Conduct and monitor required building and safety rounds.
  • Ensure accurate completion of shift logs, incident reports, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate important information to overnight staff and agency leadership.
  • Assist with the orientation, training, and development of Direct Care Counselors.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and promote a respectful, trauma-informed environment for guests and staff.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous supervisory experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising or directing staff, delegating responsibilities, providing employee guidance, and making operational decisions.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage conflict and challenging situations.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work a rotating evening schedule, including every other weekend.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in a shelter, residential program, behavioral health, human services, or similar setting.
  • Associate's Degree in Human Services or a related field.
  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, behavioral health challenges, substance use disorders, or other complex needs.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and de-escalation.

Compensation & Holiday Benefit

Pay: $23.00 -$25.00 per hour

Full-time employees are eligible for designated floating holiday time in accordance with organizational policy. Because the Samaritan Inn operates 365 days per year, employees may be scheduled to work on holidays that fall within their regular rotating schedule. Eligible floating holiday time may be scheduled for an alternate approved date based on staffing and operational needs.

Work Environment

This position works primarily within an emergency shelter environment and requires regular interaction with individuals experiencing homelessness. The Supervisor must be comfortable responding to behavioral, safety, medical, and other unexpected situations while maintaining professionalism and sound judgment.

The position requires regular movement throughout the facility, including conducting building and safety rounds.
