GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Enforces safety rules and maintains proper student behavior while on a school bus by performing the following duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Ensures safety rules are enforced and maintains a safe environment for students while riding on a school bus.

  • Creates and maintains seating charts for assigned seats for students.

  • Maintains visual contact with students under supervision.

  • Assists or places students in harnesses or booster seats as applicable.

  • Maintains all harnesses and booster seats for proper working condition.

  • Inspects bus after each trip for items left, damaged property or sleeping students.

  • Assists students while in transit as applicable.

  • Loads and unloads special needs equipment as applicable.

  • Monitors orderly entrance to and exit from the bus.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive image with students, parents, teachers and administration.

  • Reports immediately, any unsafe behavior or conditions on the bus to the bus driver.

  • Reports students to the transportation manager who continually break rules or creates serious safety problems while on the bus.

  • Collaborates with teachers and administrators regarding student behavior concerns.

  • Attends all required workshops, safety meetings, etc.

  • Assumes responsibility of maintaining up to date knowledge of technology utilized by the district.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, write and comprehend simple directions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write routine reports and documents. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and administration. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, parents, agencies, teachers or members of the school community. Ability to effectively present information to administration, staff, public groups, and/or Board of Education.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must possess basic skills in reading, writing and math for the purpose of making necessary measurements, reading of gauges and instruments, mixing chemicals or other related items as applicable. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations that may arise. Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to use computers where applicable. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
