Great Rooms Furniture & Mattresses is a family owned and growing Northern Michigan furniture retailer with locations in Gaylord and Petoskey and a new, larger Gaylord location opening in 2027.
We are looking for an experienced Accounting Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day accounting functions for our businesses.
This is not an entry-level bookkeeping position, and we aren't looking for someone who needs to be given a task list every day. We're looking for someone who understands accounting, is comfortable working independently, notices when something doesn't look right, and will investigate and follow through.
Our outside accountant will continue to handle payroll processing, tax filings, fixed assets, depreciation, debt accounting, income tax planning and higher-level CPA matters. This position will own the accounting work that happens inside the business every day.
What You'll Own
- Accounts payable, including invoice entry, coding and payment
- Vendor statements, credits, rebates and payment discrepancies
- Vendor payment terms and early-pay discounts
- Bank and credit-card reconciliations
- Receipt collection, expense coding and shared expenses
- Accounting for two related operating companies and intercompany transactions
- Merchant/deposit reconciliations
- Commission reporting
- Cash visibility and identification of unusual transactions
- Inventory accounting and inventory-to-general-ledger reconciliation
- POS-to-QuickBooks accounting and reconciliation
- Month-end preparation and recurring accounting close processes
- Vendor credits and returns through final financial resolution
- Identifying and investigating unusual balances or transactions
- Preparing accurate, organized information for our outside accountant
- Helping ownership understand what the financial statements are telling us
You'll work primarily in QuickBooks Online and learn our furniture retail POS system, Profit.
Who We're Looking For
The right person will have meaningful accounting or bookkeeping experience and a solid understanding of accounting principles—not simply experience entering bills.
You should be comfortable with:
- Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet statements
- QuickBooks Online
- Accounts payable and general-ledger accounting
- Bank and credit-card reconciliations
- Vendor credits and discrepancies
- Managing recurring responsibilities without constant reminders
- Handling confidential financial information
- Creating organized processes and improving existing ones
- Explaining accounting issues in plain English
Experience with retail, inventory accounting, multiple business entities or POS systems would be especially helpful, but isn't required.
About the Position
This is expected to start at approximately 25–30 hours per week and based in Gaylord, Michigan, supporting both Great Rooms locations and related companies.
We're intentionally offering a part-time position because we want the right amount of meaningful work—not a 40-hour position filled with tasks simply to fill a schedule.
Compensation will be competitive and based on experience.
