Job Purpose
The Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the School Director in the daily leadership, enrollment, and operational functions of the school. This role ensures a school climate conducive to learning; supports effective delivery of programs and services; oversees enrollment and outreach systems; and builds strong relationships with families and community partners. The Assistant Director models and enforces the policies and procedures of the School and assists the School Director with the educational and operational aspects of the Iowa charter school.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports the School Director and serves as Acting Director in their absence
- Oversees student enrollment processes, admissions, onboarding, and withdrawals
- Supports daily school operations including attendance, scheduling, staffing coverage, and facility coordination
- Assists with administrative duties as assigned by the School Director
- Supports school-wide initiatives aligned to the mission and goals of the School
Leadership, Operations, and Community Relations
- Assists in providing strategic leadership for school improvement, enrollment growth, and operational effectiveness
- Supports daily school operations to ensure a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment
- Maintains a strong school culture that supports positive relationships and student success
- Builds and maintains mutually supportive relationships with students, families, and community partners
- Serves as a visible representative of the School within the local community
- Develops and maintains partnerships with community organizations, workforce partners, and local employers
- Supports implementation and enforcement of school policies and procedures
- Assists the Director with discipline processes to maintain proper conduct and order
Enrollment and Outreach
- Oversees recruitment, enrollment targets, and outreach strategies
- Represents the School at community events, partner meetings, and recruitment activities
- Supports student onboarding, re-engagement, and retention efforts
- Ensures enrollment documentation and reporting meet Iowa charter requirements
Administrative
- Effectively creates and submits required weekly and monthly reports
- Assists the Director with discipline documentation and student hearings as needed
- Maintains confidentiality of all student, family, and staff information
- Ensures operational documentation aligns with state and charter requirements
Oversee Career and Technical Education (CTE)
- Supports oversight of Career and Technical Education (CTE) programming in alignment with the School’s mission and Iowa charter requirements
- Coordinates with the School Director, instructional staff, and community partners to support effective delivery of CTE pathways
- Assists with scheduling, operational logistics, and resource coordination for CTE programming
- Supports partnerships with local employers, workforce organizations, and postsecondary institutions related to CTE pathways
- Monitors student participation, engagement, and progress within CTE programming
- Assists with documentation and reporting related to CTE, work-based learning, and credential attainment as required
Facility and Personnel Development
- Supports onboarding and supervision of operational and support staff as assigned
- Assists in staff evaluation processes in alignment with school policies
- Maintains facilities in an appropriate manner and supports resolution of operational issues
- Collaborates with colleagues to maintain positive working relationships with students, families, and staff
- Participates as part of the school leadership team in planning and decision-making
Community Visibility and Summer Engagement
- Maintains an active presence in the community during summer months
- Participates in enrollment, outreach, and partnership development activities outside of the traditional school year
- Supports continuity of operations and planning during non-traditional school hours
Qualifications, Education, and Experience
Necessary and desirable qualifications include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the School
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Experience working with diverse student and family populations
- Demonstrated ability to manage school operations and enrollment systems
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and summer months
Education Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
- Iowa Charter School Administrative Authorization or Administrative License required, or willingness to obtain
Experience Preferred
- Prior experience in school leadership, enrollment management, or school operations
- Experience in charter schools or alternative education settings preferred
