PRESCHOOL ASSISTANT TEACHER
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Status: Full-time and Part Time, 20-30 hours/week available
Shifts are Monday-Friday between 6:30am-6:00pm
Starting wage $15.00/hour
**$300 Sign-On Bonus**
Sign on bonus will be awarded after completion of your first 30/60/90 days
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for the social, physical, spiritual, and mental development of each child within their care. In accordance with ODJFS and “Step Up to Quality” standards, he or she will also assist in the planning, development, and implementation of all activities, as well as keeping the safety and wellbeing of the children as a first priority.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists in managing, directing, and coordinating high-quality, childcare programs and activities for assigned classroom and age group.
- Maintains compliance with federal, state, local, and “Step Up to Quality” regulations as they relate to program areas.
- Ensures YMCA standards are met, safety procedures are followed and ensures the safety and well-being of children as a first priority.
- Interacts with children on their individual levels of development.
- Assists in development and implementation of weekly lesson plans that are effective and fit children’s needs, interests, and developmental level.
- Assists with posting meals and snacks that meet all CACFP guidelines.
- Assists with developing and maintaining relationships with state childcare licensing agency, school administration, parent groups, and other organizations and agencies related to the assigned programs at the YMCA.
- Maintains YMCA policies and procedures regarding the center, state licensing, interactions, supervision of children, and communication with parents.
- Responds to all agency, parent, and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
- Documents and reports to the Lead Teacher any special needs or problems of an individual child, staff, or parent(s).
- Aids in maintaining the appearance of the classroom/outside areas which includes keeping supplies, materials and equipment in the rooms in a neat and orderly manner.
- Attends staff meetings and ongoing trainings (10 hours per year to include first aide, communicable disease, child abuse prevention, CPR and child development classes.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Certifications: Current First Aid, Communicable Disease, Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention and CPR certifications or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
- Experience: Must have experience working with children and/or customer service experience.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Possess knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of a child.
- Have proficient computer skills.
- Be at least 18 years of age.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) while maintain alertness for long periods of time.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to interpret, adopt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Must be creative and enthusiastic to staff and program participants.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with families, children, and other staff.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
- Ability to maintain emotional control and composure in turbulent, challenging and changing conditions.
Must be a team player, dependable, detail-oriented, maintain high personal morale performing job functions, meet deadlines, and maintain prompt and regular attendance.
