The Director of Claims & Legal Operations leads the end-to-end claims management function, overseeing both employee-related matters and construction disputes. This leadership role serves as the primary liaison with external legal counsel, ensuring claims are strategically positioned and efficiently resolved. You will partner across Finance, Operations, HR, and Safety to reduce risk exposure and drive organizational accountability.
Key Responsibilities
Claims Management: Employee Matters
- Oversee workers' compensation, wage and hour, and employment-related disputes.
- Coordinate with HR, Safety, insurance carriers, and TPAs for timely reporting and resolution.
- Identify trends to mitigate recurring risks.
Claims Management: Construction Matters
- Lead management of contract disputes, change order disputes, delay claims, back charges, and defect issues.
- Partner with Project Teams to ensure proper documentation and claim positioning.
- Implement pre-claim strategies to minimize financial exposure.
Legal Coordination & Oversight
- Serve as the main point of contact for external legal counsel.
- Manage legal strategies to align with company priorities.
- Monitor attorney performance, responsiveness, and cost efficiency.
Financial & Risk Oversight
- Maintain a consolidated view of claim exposure, reserves, and financial impact.
- Support insurance renewal and risk transfer strategies with data-driven insights.
- Identify opportunities to reduce overall claim costs.
Process, Systems & Reporting
- Develop standardized claims tracking and reporting tools.
- Improve documentation practices across all departments.
- Provide regular status reports to executive leadership.
Qualifications
- Experience: 10 years in claims management, risk management, or legal operations.
- Industry Knowledge: Strong experience in the construction industry is required.
- Claims Expertise: Demonstrated experience managing both employee-related (workers' comp) and construction-related claims.
- Vendor Management: Proven track record managing external legal counsel and insurance partners.
- Technical Skills: Deep understanding of construction contracts, claims processes, and financial risk assessment.
- Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the U.S. full-time without future sponsorship.
Preferred Background
- Experience with a general or specialty contractor.
- Background in insurance, claims consulting, or construction litigation support (non-attorney).
- Experience in multi-entity or rapidly growing organizations.
Starting Salary: 160,000 DOE
