Role Description This is a full-time, on-site Reporter role based in Great Bend, KS. The Reporter will research, pitch, and develop story ideas that are relevant to local audiences across a range of beats, including government, education, community events, and breaking news. Daily responsibilities include conducting interviews, gathering information from multiple sources, verifying facts, and writing clear, accurate, and engaging news articles on deadline. The role also involves covering live events and meetings, producing content for both print and digital platforms, and collaborating with editors, photographers, and other newsroom staff. The Reporter may contribute photos, basic multimedia elements, and social media updates to support digital storytelling and audience engagement.

Qualifications

  • Strong reporting skills, including interviewing, information gathering, and fact-checking
  • Excellent news writing and general writing abilities, with attention to clarity, accuracy, and style
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build rapport with diverse sources
  • Basic multimedia skills, such as taking photos, shooting simple video, or creating digital content for online platforms
  • Ability to work on-site, manage multiple assignments, and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom
  • Familiarity with AP style, digital publishing tools, and social media best practices is preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience preferred
  • Equivalent professional experience, strong writing ability, and demonstrated reporting skills will also be considered
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required for local reporting assignments
  • Demonstrated commitment to ethical, unbiased, and community-focused journalism
