Position Overview

The Deckhand supports vessel operations and field teams during environmental emergencies, marine spill response, and hazardous materials cleanup. This role assists with boom deployment, equipment handling, decontamination, and on‑water operations while maintaining a constant state of readiness for rapid mobilization. The deckhand works closely with vessel operators, response technicians, and incident command to protect waterways, wildlife, and surrounding communities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with vessel operations, including line handling, docking, anchoring, and safe deck practices during spill response missions.
  • Use of PPE such as respirators, dry suits, flotation gear, and chemical-resistant clothing is required.
  • Deploy, retrieve, and tend containment boom and other spill control equipment under the direction of the vessel operator or response supervisor.
  • Support hazmat and environmental cleanup activities, including debris recovery, sorbent placement, shoreline cleanup, and water sampling.
  • Maintain deck and equipment readiness, ensuring tools, PPE, and response gear are clean, organized, and operational.
  • Participate in emergency call‑outs, mobilizing quickly and working safely in challenging marine and weather conditions.
  • Perform decontamination tasks, including cleaning vessels, tools, and equipment exposed to hazardous materials.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including USCG, OSHA, EPA, and company-specific procedures for hazmat and marine operations.
  • Assist with loading and unloading equipment, staging materials, and supporting logistics during response operations.
  • Complete required documentation, such as activity logs, equipment checklists, and decontamination records.
  • Participate in drills and training, maintaining certifications and operational readiness.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Schedule

  • This position is on call only, with no guarantees of regularly scheduled work.
  • Requests to support ongoing project work and emergency responses can come in any time 24/7/365.


Desired Qualifications

  • Strong work ethic with a safety-first mindset.
  • Ability to work independently or part of a team while managing multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Experience working on vessels, barges, workboats, or in marine/industrial environments.
  • Ability to safely perform physical labor, including lifting, line handling, and working on wet or unstable surfaces.
  • HAZWOPER 40‑hour certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Strong understanding of basic deck safety, PPE use, and hazard awareness.
  • Ability to work extended hours, irregular schedules, and emergency call‑outs.
  • Comfortable working in adverse weather, contaminated environments, and around heavy equipment.
  • Familiarity with small‑vessel operations and maritime terminology.
  • Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment troubleshooting.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills in fast‑moving, high‑pressure situations.


Education and Experience Required

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Experience with oil spill response, boom deployment, or marine environmental operations.
