Position Title: Library Aide/Building Aide (Parapro) Duty Personnel
Department: Assigned Building

JOB SUMMARY FOR LIBRARY AIDE: Works under the supervision of the Library Media Specialist and Principal and assists in the daily supervision of students.
JOB SUMMARY FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO): Works under the supervision of the principal and assists in duties and preparation of daily instructional materials and supplies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR LIBRARY AIDE: The library aide will provide general information and assistance to students and staff as well as perform a variety of clerical, administrative, and light maintenance duties as part of the library media program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO): Other duties may be assigned.
Assists principal in routine duty assignments such as car rider, bus, lunch, or recess supervision.
Implements/follows teacher’s instructions for classroom materials.
Prepares and/or copies planned instructional materials, as assigned.
Work in conjunction with office personnel for upkeep of copying machines and workroom materials/supplies, including but not limited to stocking paper, staplers, paper cutters, hole punchers, die cutters, etc.
Assists in the supervision of students while they are loading and unloading cars, buses, going to special classes, in the cafeteria, on the playground, etc. and in the classroom in the absence of the teacher.
Assist in administration of supplemental programs such as distribution of snack packs program, collection of food drives, angel tree program, and student lost & found, etc.
Assists with behavior management programs and techniques.
Understands and assists in meeting the special needs of students.
Maintains confidentiality and observes professional ethics.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR LIBRARY AIDE: Supervises students when the teacher is not present.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR LIBRARY AIDE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE FOR LIBRARY AIDE: High school diploma or equivalent.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO):
High school diploma or equivalent.
Associates degree or 60 college credit hours. Praxis Parapro exam may be substituted for college hours, but must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR LIBRARY AIDE: (other related duties may be assigned)
- Helps locate materials for students and staff;
- Helps supervise students to ensure noise levels stay low so that the environment remains conducive to learning;
- Helps students select Accelerated Reader (AR) books that are appropriate for their reading/interest levels;
- As needed, checks in/out materials to students and staff using the school library’s online computer system;
- As needed, helps monitor and assist students while they AR test on their books;
- Helps patrons in the use of the library’s online catalog and databases;
- Helps distribute equipment for use in the classrooms;
- Helps compile a consideration list of AR test titles book titles for possible ordering, with cross-referencing to avoid duplication;
- Laminates materials for staff at their requests usually one day per week;
- Assists in unpacking new materials and checking them off the packing list;
- Assists in the processing of new materials:
- Property stamps the materials, especially books;
- Writes basic information inside the front cover of books: fund/year purchased, vendor, price, barcode number, call number, and AR reading level/points;
- Manually catalogs new materials (as needed whenever the materials are not available with original company cataloging), by entering basic MARC cataloging information into the library’s cataloging software system from the library’s MARC database;
- Creates/prints/applies barcodes and other labels to the new materials;
- Adds new patrons and new materials to the library database by data entry;
- Creates/prints patron barcode sheets for use by the library and the cafeteria and keeps information updated;
- Re-shelves all materials as soon as possible and returns equipment to the storage room
- Creates quarterly overdue notices and gives them to the patrons;
- Helps maintain the physical appearance and ease of use of the library by cleaning/dusting/ and keeping materials in order on the shelves;
- Pulls any materials that need attention and either repairs or discards as necessary;
- Helps with the fall book fair by helping recruit volunteers; promoting the book fair by hanging posters/decorations; and working at the book fair by assisting at the cash register and/or monitoring/assisting students/guests;
- Helps prepare for year-end inventory by getting all materials in order on the shelves and encouraging students to return all materials by the final due date;
- Helps perform inventory by scanning materials, printing reconciliation reports, and helping reconcile all inventory discrepancies for the final inventory report;
- Answers the phone and takes messages as needed.

NECESSARY SKILLS FOR LIBRARY AIDE:
- Must have basic computer skills, i.e., data entry and knowledge of the following software: Microsoft Word,
- Accelerated Reader, and the library’s cataloging/ circulation software system, Follett Destiny, (or be willing to learn how to use these systems);
- Must have good analytical skills when determining the correct and exact MARC record to select from our MARC cataloging database whenever doing manual cataloging of materials;
- Must have the ability to read and interpret routine reports and correspondence;
- Must have basic math skills, i.e., adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing; must be able to perform basic computations; and be able to interpret bar graphs;
- Must have the ability to develop working relationships with students, staff, and community;
- Must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form;
- Must have the ability to perform all duties with awareness of all district requirements and board policies;
- Must be able to operate basic audiovisual equipment such as the printer, the copier, overhead projectors, and the laminating machine.
LANGUAGE SKILLS FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO):
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence, memos, or reports. Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students or other employees of the organization. Ability to effectively communicate directions
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO):
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO):
Ability to work with young children. Ability to interact with public and other staff is required. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education Policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS FOR LIBRARY AIDE: While performing the duties of this job, the library aide will be regularly required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, twist, and lift up to
25 pounds.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS FOR BUILDING AIDE (PARAPRO):
While performing the duties of this job, building aide will be regularly required to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, reach, twist, and lift up to 50 pounds and push or pull up to 100 pounds.
