Job Summary
Installs, repairs, replaces, maintains and performs preventive maintenance on all district vehicles, other than buses, as well as industrial equipment and generator units. Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position.
Essential Functions
High school diploma or equivalent
Must have two years of formal vehicle mechanic experience
Must maintain a current CDL with air brake and trailer endorsements.
Must maintain current County Emissions licenses.
Required Prior Experience
Must have two years of formal vehicle mechanic experience.
Required Knowledge And Skills
Decides the tools, equipment, parts, and materials required by each job. Makes work assignments to apprentices or hourly employees and monitors and assess the quality and timeliness of the work. Most activities require routine.
Interactions With Others
Interacts with other maintenance trades, drivers of warehouse, police, and others, including vendors, and county emission inspectors.
Supervisory Responsibility
Must be able to motivate and encourage subordinates to promote a positive and productive work environment.
Budget Responsibility
Financially responsible to maintain and track purchase card usage and follow purchasing guidelines.
Maintaining and tracking of inventory.
Working Environment
Flow of work is constant and requires accuracy and concentration. There is a variety of paperwork such as ordering parts, reports to the district, state, and county offices. There are many involuntary interruptions. District emergencies will require occasional irregular working hours. May occasionally work in conditions of heat, cold, high humidity, dust, dirt, grease, oil, noise and may be exposed to high voltage, chemicals and required to work in confined spaces. Emergencies may require working irregular hours.

Essential Functions
- Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, and rebuilds all mechanical components of vehicles including gas and diesel engines, transmission, drive train, suspension, cooling, electrical, fuel, various types of hydraulic systems, air and hydraulic brakes, steering and exhaust.
- Performs minor and major equipment modifications.
- Assists in preventative maintenance.
- Performs arc and acetylene welding.
- Performs computer and other diagnostics using appropriate testing equipment.
- Performs emission control inspections.
- Schedules with other departments to complete inspections.
- Completes maintenance and emission reports.
- Assist in the training of apprentices.
- Responsible for shop cleanliness.
- Performs some minor body repair, lube and tire repair and wheel balancing. Responds to emergency road calls for repair and/or towing or vehicles. Orders and picks up parts as needed for completion of jobs.
- Assist with once-a-year shop inventory of tools, stock I parts room, tires, etc.
- Orders inventory replacements where stock is low.
- May be asked to maintain continuity of project when the lead is absent.
- Must keep abreast of field through continuing education, manufacturer seminars and other sources.
- May train and oversee the work of apprentices and hourly employees.

- Skilled in verbal and written communication and interpersonal relations.
- Must be familiar with hand tools, small and large power tools, machine tools, instruments such as computerized scanners, micrometers, calipers, ohmmeters, ammeters, oscilloscopes, feeler gauges, vacuum gauges, cutting equipment, sharpening tools, emission control test equipment, cylinder head reconditioning tools and front-end alignment machine, etc.
- Must understand the use of schematics and flow charts.
