    Job Summary

    The College Access and Volunteer for Good (VFG) Advisor works to help more students attend college and participate in the Volunteer for Good Initiative. The advisor utilizes first-hand experience and knowledge of college to serve as college access and Volunteer for Good advisors in Granite School District high schools. The incumbent works alongside school counselors and other staff to assist students with navigating the college admissions process and participation in VFG. This includes, but is not limited to, admissions applications, financial aid forms, scholarship applications, registration and preparation for college entrance exams, and participation in the VFG service and recognition.

    Essential Functions

    • Meets with school seniors to advise on college applications, FAFSA completion, and other financial aid opportunities.
    • Supports students in registering for and taking college entrance exams; e.g. ACT, SAT, etc.
    • Encourages students to consider a broad range of appropriate post-secondary choices, including technical colleges, certificate programs, and two-year and four-year programs.
    • Assists students in completing and submitting admissions and financial-aid applications (FAFSA).
    • Supports students in interpreting correspondence from colleges, including offers of admission and financial aid.
    • Conducts follow-up meetings with students who attend college conferences or site-visits.
    • Encourages students and their families to consider, plan for, and apply to colleges and universities.
    • Promotes the importance of college to students through classroom visits, assemblies, and club meetings.
    • Establishes productive working relations with principals, counselors, and teachers in the school.
    • Communicates program progress towards established goals to school and district leadership.
    • Collaborates with school and district leadership in the area to assess the needs of the school and adapt programs and activities to meet those needs as appropriate.
    • Organizes, provides support for, and attends evening and weekend events organized around college access for schools in the district.
    • Assists students in finding scholarship resources outside of college/university and government funding.
    • Communicates with parents to keep them engaged in the college going process.
    • Conducts outreach to juniors and sophomores in the school through classroom presentations and other activities.
    • Assists school and district leadership to identify, collect, and interpret key progress and outcome variables to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
    • Supports all students in accessing the Volunteer for Good platform for service hours.
    • Promotes VFG opportunities and activities.
    • Supports the preparation for VFG end-of-year recognitions.

    Required Knowledge and Skills

    • Possess strong oral and written communication skills.

    • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
    • Ability to work as part of a team.
    • Able to accept responsibility and be self-motivated.
    • Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid processes.
    • Knowledge of college entrance exams, including registration and potential preparation.

    Required Education and Qualifications

    • Requires completion of a minimum of 48 semester hours from a regionally-accredited college or university.
    • A bachelor's degree or higher is preferred.

    Required Prior Experience

    • Experience as a college access advisor is preferred.
