Job Title: Special Education Para-Educator

**2026-2027 School Year Only**

Qualifications: High school graduation or equivalent. Must pass the para educator test or possess an AA degree. Ability to work with all age children, school staff, and parents. Interest in working with students with disabilities. Prior experience preferred. Must complete Core Competency Training the first year of employment.

REPORTS TO: Special Education Teacher, Building Principal and/or the Director of Special Education.

JOB GOAL: To provide instructional assistance to student with disabilities.

1. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
   Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the facilitator and classroom teachers.
2. Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
3. Work with other professionals, such as speech therapist, social workers, occupational and physical therapists.
4. Support students with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
5. Prepare materials for students as determined by the special education teacher.
6. Assist in monitoring students’ daily progress.
7. Provide instructional assistance to students in small group settings, within the special education room or regular classroom setting, as assigned.
8. Provided one-on-one support to students with special education needs, implementing individualized learning strategies and assisting with academic, behavioral, and daily classroom needs.
9. Work with parents of students as seems appropriate by the special education teacher and the Director of Special Education.
10. Provide supervisory duty to students with disabilities during non-instructional times.
11. Assist in self-help skills such as toileting (e.g. diapering, catheterization) and feeding, as necessary and assigned by the special education teacher or Director of Special Education.
12. Correctly position children in a safe and secure manner in adaptive equipment and effectively transfer orthopedically disabled children from wheelchairs to prone standers.
13. Daily implementation and follow-up of therapy plans developed by specialists to meet communication and motor skill goals of students.
14. Assist with management of children with special health problems or behavior problems, e.g., seizures, attention deficit disorders
15. Supervise students by enforcing safety regulations while riding the bus, such as:

• Properly fasten in seats when required.
• See that each child is seated and stays seated.
• Help load and unload students requiring assistance, including wheelchair students.
• Work cooperatively with parents, staff, and students to coordinate and communicate bus schedules and other information as needed.
• Cooperate with drivers in filling out reports.

1. Be able to perform job tasks as follows:
   • Lift and carry 10-50 lbs. frequently.
   • Assist with lifting over 50 lbs. frequently.
   • Provide care to clients in toileting requires transferring weight skills.
   • Use restraint techniques with clients when necessary.
   • Be able to bend, kneel, squat, twist, turn, and extended arm use involving various weights frequently.
   • Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
   • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: Reports to building principal and/or Director of Special Education

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

LENGTH: 190 contract days includes 10 paid holidays, 6.5 hours per day variable to 8 hours per day, depending on needs of students. 1 YEAR ONLY for the 2026-2027 School year

SCHEDULE: As assigned by the Director of Special Education and building principal.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Determined by experience and college credits, as per state law and local board policy.

EVALUATION: By the principal and/or the Director of Special Education on/before May 30th each year.
