Job Description
JOB TITLE: Custodian
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; related vocational study or training preferred. Experience in building janitorial/custodial maintenance or equivalent preferred. Knowledge of custodial methods, cleaning materials, and safe operation of custodial equipment preferred. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Successfully pass a criminal history background check.
REPORTS TO: Maintenance Director
JOB GOAL: To maintain school buildings, grounds, and facilities in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition that supports a positive learning and working environment for students, staff, and the community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides custodial services as assigned by the Maintenance Director.
- Cleans and maintains classrooms, offices, hallways, cafeterias, gyms, locker rooms, restrooms, and common areas.
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums, dusts, disinfects, and empties trash daily or as needed.
- Performs routine floor care including scrubbing, buffing, stripping, and waxing floors.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, fixtures, drinking fountains, and high-touch surfaces.
- Operates custodial equipment and uses cleaning chemicals safely and appropriately.
- Performs routine safety checks and reports unsafe conditions, vandalism, damage, or repair needs promptly.
- Perform grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, trimming, edging, and leaf blowing to maintain clean, safe, and attractive outdoor areas
- Assists with snow removal, sanding, and maintaining safe walkways and entrances.
- Keeps school grounds and outside areas free of trash and debris.
- Set up, arrange, move, and assemble furniture and equipment for classrooms, offices, meetings, and special events. Maintain all items in safe, functional, and organized condition.
- Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies as needed for school activities and events.
- Assists with event set-up and tear-down for school, athletic, and community activities.
- Must demonstrate flexibility to support school activities, athletic events, and community events, including event set-up and tear-down that may require adjusted schedules, evenings, weekends, or split shifts.
- Maintains inventory of custodial supplies and equipment and reports replacement needs.
- Assumes responsibility for securing assigned buildings during non-occupancy hours.
- Ensures doors, windows, gates, and lights are properly secured at the end of shifts.
- Responds appropriately to emergency clean-up and safety situations.
- Maintains professional conduct and communicates respectfully with staff, students, parents, and the public.
- Dresses appropriately for the position and maintains standards of cleanliness, safety, and professionalism.
- Attend in-district or out of district trainings and safety meetings as required.
- Works independently or as part of a team to complete assigned duties efficiently.
Be able to perform job tasks as follows:
- Lift and carry 10–15 lbs. frequently.
- Assist with lifting 100 lbs. occasionally.
- Load and unload products from vehicles of various heights from 3–5 feet.
- Use push and pull methods to move products in the work area.
- Store products requiring arm extension, straight and overhead reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
- Use repetitive motions involved with cleaning and custodial duties.
- Work from awkward positions to accomplish cleaning of equipment and facilities.
- Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
- Be of general good health.
- Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.
- The noise level in the work environment ranges from low to high.
- The employee will work near or with mechanical equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Maintenance Director
LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: The custodian personnel are under the direct supervision of the Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Director, who will assign specific tasks.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
LENGTH:260 days includes 12 paid holidays, 8 hours per day
SCHEDULE: As determined by the Maintenance/Custodial/Grounds Director
SALARY AND BENEFITS: As determined by the Board of Directors, state law, local board policy and PSE bargaining agreement.
EVALUATION: Annually by the Maintenance Director no later than May 30th of each year.
