Maintenance Generalist – Internal Only

Responsible for the general maintenance of all Grandville Public School Buildings.

Hourly Rate $19.79 - $24.54 (Pending Experience)

 

Monday through Friday

9:00 am – 5:30 pm

 

SUMMARY:  A Maintenance person is responsible for the general maintenance of all Grandville Public School Buildings.  He/she should be able to make repairs in a safe and proper way and follow all maintenance standards.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Must have a working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry and small equipment repair. A minimum of two years of regular/full time employment as a maintenance person is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.
  • Must be mentally alert and capable of doing repairs to equipment and building in a proper way. He/she must be able to organize his/her day repair work and develop an efficient plan for doing it.
  • The candidate should continuously present a neat appearance, be well groomed with clean and appropriate district issued clothing.
  • Must relate well with others. He/she must have demonstrated the ability to get along well with co-workers, contacts, and superiors.  He/she must see himself/herself as one who makes a better educational program possible for children because he/she recognizes that a good maintenance program provides a cheerful and healthful environment for students, teachers and community.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

 

  • Ability to pass a written and physical test. Ability to read plumbing and electrical blue prints.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.  He/she must pass: (a) a physical examination by a medical doctor, (b) a police clearance and (c) a reference check as required.
  • Must have the ability and knowledge to communicate via email, voicemail and on-line maintenance work order system.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.  The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.  Must be able to work at heights of 45 feet using power lifts.

 

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails, furniture, and unloading trucks.  Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs. such as salt and bulk furniture.  The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers and scrubbing machines.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors.  The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment.  The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned):

  • Will receive work and repair order from Foreman’s office or his designee
  • Maintains safety and code requirements of the State, Local and Board of Education guidelines
  • Maintain tools and equipment assigned to him/her
  • Inspect, repair and adjust cleaning equipment as needed
  • Performs district wide grounds maintenance work such as plowing, salting, field marking and maintenance of underground sprinkling systems
  • Responsible for repair of flush valves, mixing valves, hot and cold-water faucets, wash fountains, drinking fountains and shower heads in all buildings.
  • Responsible for the repair of broken windows, doors, panic hardware, and door closers. He/she should check door hardware for loose screws and strike plates; repairs as needed in all buildings.
  • Responsible for minor cabinet and masonry and tile repair in all buildings.
  • Shall be responsible for ballast replacement, light switches, and electrical plates and fixtures as needed in all buildings.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and be able to drive, clean, maintain, and report repairs on a school maintenance truck.
  • Shall be responsible for painting, varnishing, and proper storage of paints and varnishes as assigned.
  • Shall perform roof inspections at least two times per year, perform needed preventative maintenance, and document roof work performed.
  • Shall be responsible for reporting all repair work that is beyond his/her capacity and make recommendations on who can repair it.

 

From time to time, he/she shall perform additional maintenance services in addition to those outlined in this job description, as assigned by the Foreman or Director of Building Operations.  He/she must also be willing and available to work beyond his/her normal 40 hour schedule as needed, including Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in emergency situations.
