What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant or Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs position at Grand View University?

The Assistant or Associate Vice-President for Student Affairs will serve as Senior Student Affairs Officer. Collaborate with staff and faculty members to identify and plan for strategic goals that promote student development and student success. Ensure the effective administration of Student Life programs and compliance with applicable laws, policies, and accreditation standards. Oversee and maintain a budget, policy, planning, and assessment environment that advances the department’s mission.

Essential Functions of Job:

  • Plan and provide general oversight of and leadership for the Student Life department, including fiscal management, goal setting, evaluation of staff members, and assessment of programming.
  • Collaborate with the Provost on the integration of student personal and academic development.
  • Supervise director-level Student Life staff and functional areas: Counseling, Community Outreach, Residence Life, and Student Involvement, New Student Programs and Student Leadership.
  • Consult with faculty/staff, parents, and community members about student concerns or problems in order to resolve conflicts, initiate change, and plan programs.
  • Administer the student disciplinary system, including collecting relevant information, hearing discipline cases, coordinating the appeal process, or referring cases to committees, as needed.
  • Serve as principal Title IX Deputy Coordinator for cases involving student respondents.
  • Promote the maintenance and development of strong student development programs (e.g., back to school events, student leadership development, educational programs).
  • Prepare and monitor Student Life budget with input from staff members in functional areas. Represent department in the University budgeting process to ensure that staff needs for planning and budgeting are adequately presented and understood.
  • Serve as staff advisor to various student committees or groups (e.g., Viking Council, Student Activities Council).
  • Serve as a member of the President’s Council and represent Student Life needs; assist in University planning and policy formation.
  • Represent Student Life or delegates Student Life representation on various University committees.
  • Ensure applicable federal and state reporting (e.g., Clery Act, Drug Free Schools & Community Act, Stop Campus Hazing Act) to appropriate authorities.
  • Monitor and maintain publications for Student Life (e.g., Student Handbook, Code of Student Conduct, Housing Contracts, Student Organizations Handbook).
  • Collaborate with VP for Administration and Finance on oversight of outsourced food services, housekeeping, student health, and security services and on oversight of Student Center utilization.
  • Lead Emergency Response planning and implementation with VP for Administration and Finance & Provost.
  • Ensure policies and procedures for timely notification of on-campus crimes or emergencies.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office environment with sitting, typing, standing, bending, lifting, reaching, walking, and conversing with others in person and on the telephone.
  • This is an on-campus position.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Masters degree in education, psychology, higher education or other relevant field required.
  • Doctoral degree (PhD or EdD) preferred for Associate.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in student affairs administration at director level or above required for Assistant. 10 years required for Associate. Experience in a variety of student affairs functions preferred. Experience with Title IX investigations and coordination required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and strong self-regulation required.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and practical applications, staff supervision, budgeting, legal aspects of student affairs, and counseling psychology required.
  • Knowledge of ACPA/NASPA professional competency areas and commitment to ongoing professional development to maintain competencies required.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other software applications (e.g., Blackboard, Navigate, Maxient, eResLife, etc.) as needed required.
