Director of Nursing (RN) – Skilled Nursing Facility

Grand River Rehabilitation & Care Center is seeking an experienced and compassionate Director of Nursing to lead the clinical team at our skilled nursing facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing all nursing operations, ensuring high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, staff development, and effective departmental leadership.

This role works closely with facility leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to support exceptional clinical outcomes and resident satisfaction.

Director of Nursing Responsibilities
  • Oversee the daily operations of the nursing department to ensure quality resident care and regulatory compliance.

  • Manage nursing staff schedules, assignments, staffing adjustments, and departmental workflow.

  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, orientation, supervision, and performance management for nursing personnel.

  • Conduct employee evaluations and address disciplinary or corrective actions when necessary.

  • Collaborate with the Administrator and clinical consultants regarding admissions, resident care planning, retention, and discharge processes.

  • Ensure physician visits and clinical services are completed in accordance with applicable regulations.

  • Maintain adequate staffing levels, supplies, and equipment necessary to support resident care.

  • Assist in developing and managing the nursing department budget.

  • Conduct regular facility rounds to monitor compliance with policies, procedures, and quality standards.

  • Support and participate in staff education and professional development initiatives.

  • Ensure timely completion of resident assessments, care plans, and clinical documentation.

  • Partner with regional and interdisciplinary teams to improve quality measures and reduce avoidable hospital readmissions.

  • Provide leadership oversight for clinical programs, resident records, and nursing practices.

  • Participate in on-call responsibilities for nursing-related emergencies and ensure proper coverage when unavailable.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities with experience mentoring and developing clinical staff.

  • Knowledge of long-term care regulations, clinical operations, and quality assurance processes.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

  • Effective communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic clinical systems.

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

  • Flexibility with scheduling and occasional travel as needed.

Education & Experience
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Michigan required.

  • Current CPR certification required.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

  • Minimum of three years of Director of Nursing experience in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to walk, stand, bend, lift, push, pull, and sit for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Fine motor skills and hand coordination required for daily tasks.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

  • Must follow all workplace safety standards and infection control protocols.
