Position Summary:
The Civil / Structural Design Checker functions as a senior-level design checker and technical authority within the civil/structural design organization. This role is primarily responsible for the independent, detailed review, verification, and approval of civil and structural design deliverables prepared by other designers. Emphasis is placed on quality control, technical accuracy, constructability, and strict adherence to GIS engineering standards and project-specific requirements.
With 20–25 years of progressive civil/structural design experience, the Designer V brings deep technical judgment and practical field awareness to ensure design integrity prior to issuance. While this position is not intended to be production-focused, the Designer V may be assigned limited-scope design tasks, specialty reviews, or corrective design efforts as required to resolve complex issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform independent, comprehensive checking of civil and structural drawings, models, and design packages produced by Designers I–IV.
- Serve as the final technical reviewer and approver for civil/structural design deliverables prior to internal or external release.
- Identify design errors, omissions, inconsistencies, and constructability concerns and provide clear corrective guidance.
- Ensure full compliance with GIS drafting standards, modeling workflows, engineering practices, and project specifications.
- Review interdisciplinary interfaces to confirm coordination and clash-free design execution.
- Provide technical mentorship and oversight to designers, reinforcing best practices and quality expectations.
- Support Engineering Managers and Project Managers with technical risk identification and resolution strategies.
- Participate in constructability reviews and support field-driven design clarifications.
- Perform limited corrective or specialty design tasks when required to address technical gaps or complex conditions.
- Assist with design planning, workload forecasting, and verification of design-hour estimates as requested.
- Maintain a strong focus on quality assurance, safety, consistency, and technical excellence across all projects.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 20–25 years of progressive civil/structural design experience, including extensive experience checking and approving design work.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field a plus but not required.
- Associate degree in Drafting / Design Technology preferred.
- Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD, advanced 3D modeling platforms, and scan-data software (e.g., LFM, point clouds).
- Master-level understanding of civil and structural design principles, constructability, and industrial project execution.
- Proven expertise in independent design checking, verification, and quality control.
- Exceptional ability to interpret engineering calculations, specifications, and complex technical documentation.
- Strong ability to identify high-risk design issues and implement practical, constructible solutions.
- Demonstrated leadership in mentoring designers and enforcing consistent technical standards.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple reviews and deadlines.
- Clear, concise communication skills for documenting comments and explaining technical decisions.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality, accuracy, safety, and adherence to GIS standards.
